I am trying to find out weather I am eligible for the FSU honors college. My ACT scores will qualify, but I am not sure about my GPA. On my school transcript, it says I have a 3.9 W and 3.3 UW GPA and a rank of 59/101. I sent an e-mail to an admissions counselor and they said:

"Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, we cannot issue your GPA until your decision has been rendered. At that time, feel free to contact us on that matter. We calculate GPA slightly differently than your District Cumulative GPA; we only factor core academic courses. Dual enrollment and honors courses receive an additional half point, while AP and IB coursework receive an additional full point."

I realize that they can tell me on the 28th, but this is something to occupy my mind until then. When they say "core academic classes", I am not sure what they are referring to.

I will list each class I have taken, and if you could please tell me which are considered "core classes".

ALSO -- even if you are not immediately accepted for honors you can try
Admission by Petition
Students who are accepted into FSU but who do not receive a letter of invitation may petition for admission to the Honors Program by submitting a petition portfolio. Successful applicants generally meet at least TWO of the following three requirements, though meeting these requirements alone does not guarantee admission:

* 3.7 or higher FSU-weighted high school GPA (Contact Admissions to find your weighted FSU GPA)
* A qualifying test score, which may be either 1260 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT
* Class rank in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class

If you call admissions directly on the phone, they should give you what your weighted GPA would be according to them. My daughter called admissions and they pulled her file and told her over the phone. According to the Honors program if you meet their requirements you are in honors if you choose to be. (They will send you an invitation for RSVP for the program.) They will have 600 slots for honor students for freshmen fall of 2008.

Here you go. This is the only GPA that matters. I think your strength of schedule might help your GPA. FSU gives brownie points for taking the hardest classes you can, and I have seen B students with lots of AP’s get in.

Recalculating my sister’s (she’ll be a senior next fall) high school GPA for FSU we gave an additional full point for dual enrollment courses. Per admission counselor’s remarks in Pistol’s post above FSU is only giving 1/2 point for dual enrollment courses. This conflicts with info on FSU’s website:

Q: Are Honors, AP, IB, and AICE classes weighed?
Yes. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, AICE, and Dual Enrollment courses in which you receive a C or better are weighted a full point; Academic Honors, Pacesetter, pre-AP, pre-IB, and pre-AICE a half point.

Does anybody know for sure which value for dual enrollment FSU is currently using for upcoming freshman applicants? My sister now has 24 cr hrs of dual enrollment with straight A’s and a full additional point would help her GPA a lot. Thanks for any advice.

Wow! Just noticed Pistol’s post above is almost 2 years old! Fell asleep at the wheel here. We’ll call FSU admissions tomorrow and double check on current method of calculating FSU GPA.

Florida passed a law that mandates now that state colleges and universities as well as public high schools weight DE the same as AP. Some high schools are not incorporating that until they are mandated to with the freshman class that started this past year, but colleges and U’s have made the change as far as I know. FSU gives full weight. But now that they do, we will see that the average GPA of those accepted will go up, as there are still just slots for the same number of freshman. I agree that those who take DE deserve the bump.
