FSU YSP 2016

Thread for anyone applying to the 2016 FSU YSP. Feel free to share stats, questions, etc. Floridians represent! (Just kidding, I hate Florida)

I applied as well. I would be interested in sharing stats with others just to see roughly how competitive the field is this year. Does anyone know how strong the bias is against rising juniors? I feel as if I am very qualified and was wondering how much my age will disadvantage me.

@RandomUsername42 I’m sure there’s a bias but I have no idea how strong it is. What did you get on the recent PSAT?

It would be helpful to know how competitive the program is overall, like if most of the people accepted have done research (does anyone know how close this is to being true?)

I got a 760/760 M and a 720/760 CR/W (I did not include any scores other than PSAT). I have also done research.

@RandomUsername42 that sounds competitive. I have about that on the PSAT and have also done research, we’re probably about the same haha. I just wonder how everyone else is. Are other people entering from your school, and did they announce it for you guys to enter? I think I’m the only one from my school entering

@coffeeaddicted lol I think we’re in the same position. Nobody else at my school even knows that it exists.

@RandomUsername42 What was the extent of your research project?

Oh and I saw on the counselor evaluation they have to rank us against everyone else in our school, so I guess we’re both good in that aspect :))

@coffeeaddicted I completed two projects with a local university. I also did other projects for student competitions independently.

@RandomUsername42 Well your profile is probably comparable to the top juniors in the state and probably better than mine, so I wouldn’t be too worried. I only started research this summer and am just about to have my first publication.

@coffeeaddicted well only one of them (which I am a coauthor) has gotten published. Any research, especially at the level where there is a publication, is pretty impressive. Would be nice to see more people’s stats (N=2 from an unbalanced sampling method isn’t particularly significant). I’m wondering when we really get notifications, since it must be before 5/12 if that’s when everything is final. Also hoping for a few more non-biology projects this year.

Has anyone heard back from the program yet?

I haven’t

I doubt we’ll get results before May : /

Wow, you guys have really great experience! I don’t really have any lab work to speak of, just high standardized test scores (97th+) and a few year’s work with Special Olympics and my local hospital. How have you guys conducted research and gotten published while in high school?

@VioletWiz I’m doing a minor conference and my work on a lab experience is going to be published…eventually lol.

Guys I have kind of a major problem. My application went in a few days late :frowning: I let them know and explained extenuating circumstances and said I’d get it in the day after the deadline and they said OK, but it took me forever to get parts from people and it ended up going in 3 days after the deadline. I have good stats (36 ACT, 1490 PSAT, research experience, great essay) but does anyone think I killed my chances of getting in?

The last thing they said to you was that you were in the clear, so I would try not worry about it too much.

If you notified them and they said it was fine, then I don’t see how there would be a problem.

I just got an email- accepted!!! Not trying to brag just wanted to let you know so they should be coming out!

@ongdrumr Do you know if they sent the emails together or one by one?

Accepted as well!
