FTC vs Senator's Office

Hello all,

I have the opportunity to intern at either the FTC or my senator's office in DC this spring. I'm a little torn because both sound like great opportunities. I've worked for my congressman before, so it might be better to get a different experience at the FTC, but I'm not entirely sure if I have the skills necessary/would be interested in the projects.

Does anyone know which might be better professionally (on a resume, in terms of connections, work environment, etc)? I realize the question's a little obscure but I'm really on the fence so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Go for the FTC. Although congressional offices vary, most of the time you will be doing VERY menial work for a senator. My D interned for a senator one summer in DC, and found that of all her internships, it was by far the least productive one in terms of learning skills and doing “real work”. Other places she interned included the State Department, the Army War College, and the Breakthrough Collaborative (inner city teaching). All the other internships were better than the senator’s office in terms of building her resume for future jobs. Since you have already done some work for the senator, too, do the FTC internship. You will learn new skills. And you might find the projects more interesting that you would think (at least they are likely to be more “real work”, too).
