full ride at wayne or u of m?

I'm having a really hard time decided which school to pick! I got a full ride to Wayne State University, and although that is great financially I'm not sure how I would like it there. I'm also in at University of Michigan, but received no scholorship (apparently I was only one point away on any section of the ACT from receiving a full ride to uofm! can you beleive it?! one point! so frustrating).

A big factor about this desicion is my future plans. Because I want to go to medical school, I know GPA is a big deal and I know I can have a more competitive GPA at Wayne State than at Umich, and because Wayne has a new honors program I could probably receive more personal attention (but how reputable is it?). However, does the name of your school make a really big difference? Also, I would love to get into Umich med someday, and I hear they rarely take their own students. At Umich I would probably do biomedical engineering for undergrad, which is tough to maintain good grades with but it does leave options open to me if medicine does not work out in the end. At Wayne I would probably do a typical science degree and with a ton of AP credits try to graduate in three years.

So, do I take the full ride and try to outshine the competition, or do I go to Umich for a good name? I really need some suggestions, especially if you are current students at either school or are in the same situation. Thanks!

I personally would say Michigan by a mile, due in large part to the difference between Ann Arbor and UM sports against Detroit and Wayne sports. However, two students from my HS went to Wayne in almost the same situation(one actually got into Brown with pretty dang good aid too), and are very very happy with their decisions.

So, as advice - both are solid options. As opinion - go to UM.

Michigan is a much better school compared to Wayne State. Go to Michigan.

Go to U of M. You will not be challenged at Wayne State as you will be at U of M, and the cultural, social, and athletic scene at U of M is indescribably better.

By the way, the only full ride scholarship to the University of Michigan that I know of is the Shipman scholarship, which is based on academic achievement and an interview. As far as I know, there is no cutoff ACT score to be considered. Where did you get the information that you were 1 point away?

My dad actually was in your position many moons ago. He ended up going to Wayne State and then transferring to U of M after one semester. He said Wayne was too much like high school for him.

Nonsense. Go to Wayne and save your money for medical school. I have known MANY undergrads from Wayne who got accepted to med schools. If that is your dream, and you can carry a high gpa, Wayne will do you just fine. Go to Michigan on the weekends and visit your friends. It's not that far away.

I heard the ACT cutoff thing from some of my friends who did receive the full ride and apparently alot of people knew this as well. For girls applying to engineering, if you receive a 35 on your ACT you automatically get a full ride pretty much (of course, you must remain in engineering). Sadly, I had a 34 that with one more on any section would have been a 35. Ahh so close =)

Maybe you could take a year out and reapply next year with a better ACT score? Then you would have U of M and the money.

HI
It is too late to ask.
Bur it is useful to usto know.
What you did ? How you feel later?
Please share your experience with us.

Hi! I am also a prospective student in the same situation! Can you please talk about what you picked and what you liked/didn’t like about your decision? That would be extremely helpful.
Thank you

I do not think that every girl in eng’g with an ACT 35 or 36 gets a free ride to UMich. I think you were given misleading info.

Does it make sense that girls with a 35 get a free ride, but those with a 34 get nothing???
