Full Ride Chances

I just started my senior year of high school and I am worried about how I am going to pay for college. It's most likely that my parent's will not help me pay a single cent for my college expenses. I am planning on attending a school in the state of TN (I'm from Memphis but prefer to attend a school far from it). I need a school that can provide me full tuition and maybe even more for additional expenses. Any ideas?

Here are some information about myself:
Family Income (both parents) - ~$80k
ACT - 32 (Plan on retaking for a higher score)
GPA - 3.94
Community Service - 100+hrs
Leadership Positions - President of a club for 11 & 12

Those are just a few, but I have excellent standardized test grades, and am planning on doing more to improve. What other things should I do in order to increase my chances for a scholarship?

do you qualify for HOPE?

Also, with your stats, you should be able to combine HOPE with merit from some other Tenn schools…like Middle Tenn. Not sure if UTenn would give you much merit, but if they will stack merit onto HOPE, that would be good.

UTenn-Chatt might also give you merit, but it’s a bit of a commuter school.

You can borrow $5500 as a frosh.

What did you score on the PSAT?

Your stats qualify you for a number of Full Tuition or Full Ride scholarships from the list below. None are in Tennessee, but many are in neighboring states.

I meet the requirements for HOPE, but I can’t submit an application yet according to FAFSA. What are my chances for UTKnox?
Can you explain your last sentence to me?

Does HOPE cover full tuition at an instate public???

What are your chances for merit money at UT-Knoxville?

I don’t know…have you looked at their scholarship pages? if their awards aren’t assured for stats, then it’s anyone’s guess.

be sure to apply to a few instate publics that you will CERTAINLY get large merit.

What is your major?

You qualify for the Hope Scholarship which pays 4,000 a year. You also qualify for the General Assembly Merit Scholarship which is another 1,000. You can file the FASFA on Jan 1.

The likelihood of a full ride at UTK is not that great. (Make sure you recalculate your GPA based on their calculations) They don’t give very much in merit scholarships and they are very competitive. Most winners have at least a 32 ACT and a 4.0 GPA. My S has a 33 ACT, a 4.25 GPA and is an Eagle Scout with alot of community service and ECs. We are not counting on a full scholarship at UTK. But we will be applying and will hope for the best. Best recommendation for UTK scholarship - start writing your essay and have it reviewed. Make sure it showcases YOU.

STATE SCHOOLS - We have talked to Middle Tennessee State University, Austin Peay and UTC, all three have indicated that S would be in the running for a full scholarship there. You may want to try there. I have also heard ETSU has good merit aid.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS - I have also heard that Union College in Jackson is very generous on merit aid too. S’s GF’s BFF is only paying $500 per semester after all her aid. She has similar stats as you.

Nice list Bob - thanks - gives us a few more options

If you want to be far from Memphis and in fact over the state line (like in AL, AR or LA, and more), there are indeed some nice options for you listed in this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/14675705-post98.html

At minimum you could apply to a couple of these as financial safeties while you pursue UTK and other options.
