Hello!

I was wondering if anyone had ideas of good schools I have a chance of getting a full ride at. I've been looking a lot at ASU because they give full rides to National Merit Scholars, and because the Barrett Honors College appeals to me. Someone recently sent me a PM suggesting University of Miami as a good school in a good location that gives a lot of money and some full rides. Any other ideas of schools I have a chance to go to for free or almost for free? I'm especially interested in schools with great locations, such as near the ocean, mountains, or city. Great academics are also an obvious plus. And nice campuses.

Here are some stats:
ACT: 34
SAT: 2260
PSAT:228 (National Merit I'm pretty sure)
AP's: 5's in Psychology, Biology, English 11, Statistics, and World History; 4 in US History
GPA: 4.5 or something weighted.. only 2 or 3 B's in 3 years, top 5% of my class, possibly top 1%

ECs:
Captain of the boys tennis team, 4 years varsity, 2 years manager of girls team
Vice Pres of the band
Founder/Pres of Amnesty International Student Group
Swim team 4 years varsity
Jobs: Month long trail crew job in Colorado this summer, Lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons

Soooooo yeah those are my basics, I hope you guys can come up with some ideas for me! Thanks!

What is your state of residency? Long Beach State in California gives full rides to top students.

Your stats look really great -

Macaulay Honors College is part of the CUNY provides tuition free program - with possibility of dorm at Hunter College for 2 yrs plus a MAC book pro plus $7500 for internship/study abroad. My D was didn’t make the cut for Macaulay but with lower stats than you received a full tuition scholarship for Hunter.

A lot of colleges have presidential scholarships for top students especially if you look at schools where you are above-average. Do some research for schools that are slightly below the top ten that provide merit aid. Look at private colleges first (they have more money).

“Full ride”…I thought ASU offered Tuition, not tuition/housing/food.

Here is a link I found…not sure if it’s accurate…but…

Do they ever award full-rides to transfers at all?
What about other schools in california offering a Full-ride beside Long Beach?

There are very few merit scholarships available for transfers.

Colleges use merit scholarships to boost their incoming freshman class, which gets included in the calculations for various college ranking schemes. Transfer students aren’t counted in this process, so colleges don’t have that financial incentive to bring them in.

hoopser77: My state of residency is Illinois. Could I still get the Long Beach scholarship? Are there any other good schools in California that give good aid?

thumper1: I have heard Alabama gives a lot of money. It’s a pretty good school too, and the campus looks pretty. I’m not sure how I feel about going that far south though. It’s definitely a possibility.

akebias: Ok thanks I’ll look into those.

capenn15: Oh you’re right, it might not be a guaranteed full ride. It’s still a lot though, and Barrett seems really nice.

happymomof1: Oh thanks a lot, those links are helpful!

Any more ideas? I’m especially interested in Tier 1 schools with really good academics and great locations.

Are you a transfer students? I’m not sure that any of these schools offer this merit aid to transfer students.

OP…if you are in high school…why are you asking this question?

That was jacefromla hijacking the thread.

OH…sorry…didn’t see the hijack.

Arizona is farther away from you than Alabama.

If you’re concerned about being in “the south,” Tuscaloosa is not that “southern” at all.

I’m not sure about out of state residents getting the scholarship, it’s something you would have to look into. Public colleges in California notoriously give crappy aid, but I’m sure there are many private ones that give great aid. Stanford, CalTech, university of la Verne, and occidental college are names that come to mind (although I know nothing of their financial aid policies, they are names to go off of. )

mom2collegekids: What do you mean Tuscaloosa isn’t very “southern”? Is Tuscaloosa a nice city to live in?

The Long Beach State scholarship is available only to California high school valedictorians. Sorry.

Would you qualify for any needs based financial aid?

There are a lot of private schools giving out a lot of money so that money doesn’t become an obstacle for students. Mot are not limiting the aid to sub $60K income families anymore. Some have income caps as high as $180K per year now.
