OK folks, Dad here and first time posting. I was talking with one of those coaching programs that specialize in helping with prescreens, auditions, unified, etc. I was kind of blown away when she said that she definitely knows of some programs that offer full ride scholarships for BFA acting or MT for that matter. I have done extensive research and have found NONE that do this. Now for clarification. I am not talking about any 100% need based universities-- I know about them. I am not talking about any BA programs that offer FREE colleges admission–I know about those too. I am not talking about any program other than a BFA ( Major) in Acting or Drama.
So this begs the question…Is this person lying? is she trying to make a sale? There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site and many that have come before me and have more experience in this area than myself–so maybe I missed something.
right you are…I could get a consult next for only $150.00. To be fair , it was a free call. maybe its worth it? Not sure it exists–that’s why I threw it out there.
I think when you pay your $150 you’ll get schools that give out merit scholarships (maybe to any major) and that those who got them had 4.0/ACT 36.
My daughter was in the theater program at Wyo. She could use merit scholarship from the school, any outside scholarships, and there was a small, ~$2000, department scholarship. Some may have even received more from the department but I don’t think anyone got more than $5k. Now if you live in Wyo, the tuition and R&B was low to begin with, so the student may have paid little or nothing. Even my daughter from OOS didn’t have a big bill. It was a lot of smaller sources of money, not one big “Here’s your full ride” award.
In Florida, a student could use Bright Futures, Benacquito, or school scholarships and also have tuition, R&B covered, but those aren’t theater or MT scholarships. You have to be smart as well as talented.
Thanks you guys for the responses–let me clarify something i did not in my earlier post–Im not talking about grades for merit-- not talking test scores–I know those exsist–just not in the cards for us. As a matter of fact, I mentioned to her this would need to be test optional schools. Most are NOW because of Covid but some schools may return testing for 2022 which would be her freshman year.
Im also taking about “institutional full ride” for BFA Acting programs. Not outside money. I really don’t think it exists.
I think you are right. I doubt there is a college drama/music department that has a full ride (tuition, fee, room, board) for a talented actor/dancer without grades/scores coming into play.
But you’ve come to the right place. If there is such a scholarship, someone on CC will have heard of it.
The person you spoke to may think there are plenty of them, but when you dig into it after you pay the $150, you will probably find that those full scholarships had other components like financial need, sports, merit for grades. Both my kids has a combination of a lot of things like financial need, sports, talent, grades that made up their packages. The only true full rides I know of are sports (for a few sports) and merit (like NMF).
My D got a full ride as a BFA in ballet, but it was merit based. Doing a BFA helped a great deal in standing out amongst the mostly STEM kids she was competing with (and I’m pretty convinced she wouldn’t have won as an applicant for say engineering), but she still needed to have the same grades and test scores (4.0/35) that they did. There were some other places with talent based merit but that was only a few thousand dollars a year.
