Full-ride scholarships

Hello to all,

I don't want anyone to go out searching for this, but if the any of the schools you are looking at (or currently go to) offer a full-tuition scholarship of any type, would you kindly reply to this post? I tried to search for lists on the Internet and didn't really find anything. Your help is truly appreciated!

I will be attending Illinois Wesleyan University this fall, and I don’t think they offer any full tuition scholarships, except maybe for international students. However, I do know of a couple schools that do, that I either looked at or know others who have.

My question is this though- in your post title, you say full ride. In your paragraph, you say full tuition. Which do you really mean? “Full tuition” generally means just the tuition, whereas “Full-ride” means tuition plus room and board (so everything, you have to pay nothing really except books, travel, and other personal expenses).

Concordia College in Moorhead, MN offers 5 full tuition scholarships to freshmen each year. To get it, you must have a 3.9 UW GPA and an ACT of 30 or above, or an equivalent SAT. They say exactly what the SAT requirement is on the scholarships page on their website; I just can’t remember what it is, sorry. You could look into that. With that, all you’d have to pay is room & board, books, personal expenses, etc. and tuition for extra classes you decide to take (if you do) beyond the normal credit load. If you haven’t heard of this college, the website is [Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. - Concordia College-Moorhead, Minnesota](http://www.cord.edu) and it’s a small private, Lutheran liberal arts college of about 2800 students. Strongest programs are probably music and languages. It’s not super highly ranked, it’s more of one of those underappreciated colleges. A downside to it is that it’s in Moorhead, which is northern MN, near Fargo, ND (right on the border). You actually go between MN and ND a lot if you go there because it’s literally right there. So, it’s really cold in winter up there; you’ll have to decide if you can live with that. I applied there and considered going. Decided against it for a few reasons, one of which was weather. I visited 3 times (for regular stuff plus music auditions), and one of those times was a horrible weekend in January in which it was like -30 degrees up there. I’m from MN, around the Twin Cities, so I’m used to cold, but it was just really, really cold there. That weekend was worse than usual, but it still can be kinda bad, depending on where you’re from…Enough about that one.

Drake University- offers full tuition and full ride scholarships. One of my friends this year almost got one. I’m not sure of the exact requirements; I think they’re similar to Concordia’s. Another small college, I think it’s somewhere around 3000-5000 students, not really sure, it’s in Des Moines, Iowa. I don’t know a lot about it or its programs really.

Some other random ones I’ve heard of that offer either/both full tuition and/or full ride, although I don’t know anything about them, I think they were Cardinal Stritch University somewhere in Wisconsin and some other ones too.

CC has these already about this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/306786-colleges-full-rides-full-tuition-based-soley-gpa-extracurriculars-n-sat.html</a><br>

There are some others that offer these kinds of scholarships for sports and such, but I was assuming you meant offering them for academics, so that’s all I listed above.

good luck with your college search and hope this helps give you a couple ideas!

Sorry, I know you said not to go look things up for you, but I quickly googled “colleges with full tuition scholarships” and found that. I couldn’t remember some that I knew offered that, so I had to find out. Goggle it and you could find more. Quite a few colleges actually offer scholarships like that.

There are scads of threads on this here at CC. If you scroll through the Parents Forum and the Financial Aid Forum you will find them.

OP- are your parents refusing to/can’t pay anything for college? Or do you just want to avoid debt if possible? If you just want to avoid coming out with a ton of debt but your parents can and will help at least a little, there are also colleges that offer very good merit aid that’s not full tuition but still very good, and that would give you more options.

If you could list your academic stats, then maybe some people could suggest which colleges would likely give you very good merit aid.

What year in school are you going to be this fall? How much time do you have to figure this out?

Michigan State has a competition ( I think its actually a multiple choice test) where the top 20 or so people get a full ride scholarship, that’s tuition as well as everything else.

Start with this one: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html</a></p>

Two threads that offer unbeatable advice on how to locate full-ride scholarships are:

What are your stats?

Does your screen name indicate that you’re a transfer student? If so, I doubt there are any full ride scholarships for transfer students.

I think the OP left out one very important piece of information, please note their user name. I’m not sure why you’re asking as it seems you’ve already applied, but as a transfer, you need to be looking at this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/983014-merit-scholarships-transfer-students.html</a></p>

iluvpiano,

Thank you so much for your help! I wasn’t aware that full-ride was different from full-tuition (I just meant full-tuition in the post). I will look into the suggestions you provided and the webpages as well. I am currently a student in college, preparing to transfer this fall. I’m asking for my sister, who is applying for freshman admission next year because she is really interested in minimizing her debt, so I thought I would try to find out and see if anything is available that she might want to look into.

By the way, great username - I’m also a pianist.

happymomof1,

Thanks - I will look at the links and check in the parents forum soon.

HiimCole,

Thanks for your help.

mom2collegekids and entomom,

I am a transfer student, but I’m asking for my sister who will be a freshman next year.

Well…what are your sister’s stats?

What is her likely major?

There is a big difference between “full ride” and full scholarship. Will your parents pay for her room, board, fees, books, etc?
