Full ride to ASU vs. paying half for an Ivy League

How much debt will you have at graduation?

The ivy league I am considering is Dartmouth and Cornell (got off waiting list).

I am a little confused as you previously said that you were accepted to these schools (Dartmouth specifically) during the RD cycle and you were deciding between them and your state U.

got a 39k/year scholarship to Vanderbilt (how darn generous!!!!) and will pay about half the total cost at Duke and Dartmouth.

Truth is, I DON'T WANT to attend Stanford, or Cornell, or UPenn, or w/e, among other superb undergrad schools. But my mom really would like me to, and I realize that going to one of those will probably make the greatest impact on my future, something I probably won't regret...

Since it is well after 5/1 shouldn't a decision have already been made?
Testing for understanding....

Did you send in your intent to enroll at either Cornell or Dartmouth?
or
Did you send in your intent to enroll at your state U?

Have you been called of of Cornell's waitlist and are now deciding between Cornell and the state U (meaning Dartmouth was off the table)?

or
Have you recently been called off of both Cornell's and Dartmouth's waitlist and now trying to decide between them and your state U.

At Sybbie:
can we talk about MY original post and leave that somewhere else for stanfordkid?

I don't think I'll be in debt should I not choose ASU, but ASU will be much easier on the pocketbooks, especially considering medical school. I don't think I'd go to ASU unless I had clear med school intentions.

1.Keep in mind that all that glitters is not gold as your "free ride" and having ASU essentially pay you isn't exactly free as any scholarship monies given over the cost of tuition and books is considered taxable income.

If the money issue were not on the table, would ASU still be an attractive option for you (my guess would be no because if it really were and you had done your due diligence, it would have been your safety school and this question would have come up earlier in the application cycle)? As far as the money part is concerned only the people who are actually writing the checks for you to attend any college can answer what college is "worth" them paying for you to attend.

Have your parents actually told you that the $$ that they would save sending you to Brown that they would use to help send you to med school (i'm just putting it out there because you must look at each and every scenario).

Go back to basics;
take a sheet of paper
fold in half and fold in half again
at the top half evaluate the pros of attending Brown and ASU
On the bottom half, write the cons of attending each school.

I whole heartedly agree with sybbie...

Go back to basics and do a pro/on list.

I would go to the Ivy if I were you. That would be the wise choice even if you have to take out loans. This is your chance to separate yourself from the pack.

If you're not gonna be in debt, definitely go to the Ivy League school. If your parents aren't making you take out loans, they obviously support your decision.

I think laxdude's "HYP caliber school" is UCLA

Wow, to think that because my parents didn't have enough money to fully cover my education, so I had to take out some loans, they obviously didn't support my decision at all.

The only thing I know about ASU's honors college is one of my friends, a fellow grad student at Caltech, went there for his undergrad, and he seemed to enjoy it a lot. He got into a bunch of well-ranked schools, and had some really good research experiences while at ASU.

...But I never said that. Parents can support a decision while still having the student take loans. But, if a parent is not having the student take loans, they obviously support the decision.

xover2daflo, my son was in a similar situation some weeks ago deciding between Rice with a $20,000 scholarship vs. ASU's OOS NM scholarship of $23,000. He and I are both OK with either choice but ultimately decided to chose ASU's Barrett's Honors College. In your case, the different between the two might be $25,000 per year. You shall be able to get into med school if you do well at either ASU Barrett or the IVY league school you enroll. Going to ASU will save you $100,000 in four year and that shall come in handy for your medical school eduation. However, one thing you need to check to see if the National Merit deadline for naming ASU as the first choice college has passed or not

IVY no question
