Full Ride to IU

I've been looking at IU bloomington recently, specifically the financial aid information. What I found is that I automatically qualify for 9k a year because of my ACT score and gpa. this is great, but it would still cost me over 80k for 4 years tuition (kentucky- out of state).
I also stumbled upon the Kelley Scholars Program scholarship, which includes full tuition and a books/room and board stipend. Selective Scholarships: Types of Scholarships: Office of Scholarships: IU Bloomington

I meet all the requirements for this, except that I am ranked 35 out of approx. 250-300 students (top 10% of class is required). I have a 31 on the ACT and a 3.9 gpa, the only B when I took spanish 1 in the 8th grade (ended the year with an 89).

My question (perhaps a dumb one), is: is there anything at all I can do to be considered for this scholarship? the priority date for admission is Nov. 1st, so unless 10 people ahead of me in rank 'disappear', my rank won't go up.

I feel completely awful that missing a few homework assignments when I was 13 years old is holding me back from an amazing opportunity. I know i'm probably SOL, but is there any possible way this could work out? thanks in advance...

You're probably out of luck. Most schools adhere to the stated scholarship guidelines. It's conceivable they might consider your application, but the rest of the candidate pool will fall within the parameters, with a number of applicants with close to "flawless" stats.

You might consider looking elsewhere where your chances would be more competitive.

Good luck.

One question I would ask your school - do they consider a class you took in 8th grade on your transcripts and when they calculate your GPA? This seems unusual compared to schools around here (2 hours from IU Bloomington). If that is the case before giving up all hope I would talk with IU. As an alumni from there I know they get thousands of applications but I also know that they are making attempts to increase their OOS applicants. I am of the vein, it never hurts to ask. Good luck.

murmur- yes, because I received a high school credit for the course I took in 8th grade, they factor it in to my gpa and rank.

i'll attempt to contact IU about the matter.

since i've reached an IU alumni, I might as well ask another question. I printed out an application, and it doesn't call for any essays or recommendation letters. did I miss something? this strikes me as somewhat odd, as most schools i've looked at require both.

also, do I just send in my application whenever (applying for 2009 fall semester)? I know they have rolling admission, and I couldn't find any info about when applications should be sent in (other than before nov. 1st). should I just go ahead and fill out the app and send it in tomorrow or something?

ragingbull--I would strongly encourage you to ask your question regarding the scholarship(and direct admits since it's required for the scholarship also) on the IU forum as many of the posters there are Kelley students. The Kelley Scholars Program is very selective and very few receive this award-about 10 or so.

As another alum, and parent of a HS sr. applying to IU, no there is not an essay or recommendations. IU receives too many applications to look at recommendations or essays for each applicant. According to the common data set they look at class rank, GPA, and standardized test scores. You do however need to have your guidance counselor sign the app or the counselor signature page if you do the online app.
