Hi there I currently have no college credit and am considering either going to community college or re-applying to college as a freshman as I had to leave Northeastern because of financial reasons. Since I've been seeing that full scholarships to transfers are extremely rare, would there be a school with a business program that would give me a full ride as a freshman appliacant with the following stats or would it be better to do 2 years at a community college and transfer to an in state public school I can afford (I'm a CA student and am funding my own college education so I would not be able to afford a private school without a full ride)? It's been brought to my attention that Troy in Alabama would give me full tuition with these stats. Also, I am open to going anywhere in the country.

How did you end up with no credits after a full semester at NEU? Or are they just not releasing your transcript due to the financial issue? Those are two very different things, and many schools would make the distinction between a first-time incoming freshman and a transfer with no credits (and possibly no transcript).

Do you qualify for other forms of need-based financial aid such as the Pell and Cal Grant programs? Are there any schools close to your home, other than CC’s? What do you want to major in?

If you were a freshman who got college credits at NEU, you are a transfer student whether you want to be…or not. You are required to send transcripts from ALL previous colleges.

If you withdrew from NEU BEFORE the start of classes and earned no credits there, perhaps you would be considered an incoming freshman. Otherwise…not.

Regarding your question about “full rides with these stats”…you should read the thread by momfromtexas. It’s a bit on the old side but she did find very generous scholarships for her kiddos and one had similar stats.

You do have the issue of that year at Northeastern. By "going virgin’, you are not complying with the colleges’ requests. If you took any federal money in form of loans, grants, work study, anything, be aware that this will follow you to the other school even if you pretend you never went to college. That question is usually directly asked, by the way, and you should not lie on it. Without going into the morality of lying and hiding this part of your life, the reason not to do so is that if you are caught, you can be expelled, your aid taken away from you and have other penalties as well. You are a transfer student.

Agree that the OP needs to acknowledge their time at NEU. That said, the definition of who is a transfer student varies with the school. Some consider you a transfer if you’ve taken 1 post-HS college course, others have credit limits and some consider you a fr applicant if you have not completed a full year of college.

The following was posted by the OP on the transfer forum. It clarifies his/her situation with NEU. Bottom line…he/she needs to reconcile his account with NEU or he really cannot “transfer” anywhere or matriculate anywhere. NEU will not release his transcript until the bill is paid.

So OP…you need to work out a payment plan with NEU and figure out how to reconcile your account with NEU.

I currently have an unpaid balance to Northeastern University as I withdrew from the university after the first semester. I am going to be enrolling in a community college in the spring quarter in hopes of transferring to a university by fall 2012. However, I was told by others that I need to pay off my balance and obtain that transcript before I can apply to transfer as schools ask for ALL records of college. So in my case, I’m going to need to send them transcripts for Northeastern and community college. This may be difficult since the balance is quite large and I am receiving no help from family, so is my only option, to wait until fall 2013 to transfer and spend the year (fall '12-fall’13) working my a* off? Until I found out that they would also want NU transcripts, I was just planning on starting over with no credits at community college while slowly paying off northeastern. *

this is a sad situation. I hope other students who are considering enrolling in school where they don’t have all the funds for read this as a warning.

collegesound…did you withdraw from NEU during the first semester? If not, then how come you don’t have any credits from the first semester?
