Full ride

I want to know my chances for schools in NC. GPA is 4.5 weighed and 3.9 unweighed. In top 10%(26 of 350).

What are your test scores?

ACT 24 taking sat in june

It’s probably easier to get accepted at HYPSM than it is to get a merit based full instate ride. I’d call the college in which you have an interest and ask how many full ride scholarships are offered and how many students on average apply.

I think you need to either raise that ACT score substantially OR get an outstanding score on the SAT to be in contention for merit aid in NC.

And I was thinking my scores were good enough

I don’t agree that an in state full ride is harder to get than Harvard admission - for instance the Appalachian State Chancellor’s scholarship:

http://admissions.appstate.edu/scholarships/chancellors-scholarship</a></p>

Not even close. You’ll need at least a 30 ACT score to even be considered for a generous amount of financial aid.

If you are talking about those NC schools that are highly selective, some of them among the most selective schools in the country, your ACT score is on the low side for getting accepted, not even thinking about merit aid. In such cases, yes, getting a full ride to Duke, Davidson, UNC-CH, Wake Forest may be more difficult statistically than getting into HPY. However, those are the very top schools in the state and rank way up there in national ratings as well. There are plenty of schools in NC that do not have such a steep admissions curve, and may well have merit money for someone with a 24 ACT. My son got merit money with a 22 ACT. Just not at schools that are very well known.

Full rides are usually based on test scores that also have a good GPA. The schools that give full rides expect scores that are at the top of their acceptance pool.

As Bob Wallace states, at App State, the ACT must be a 33.

There may be some schools that might give some merit for an ACT 24, but it probably won’t be much money. There are some low-level privates that give some merit to almost all applicants, but the amounts are just small fractions and are really phony discounts.

Thank you… I guess it all depends on the school. The school I initially wanted to attend in MS would give me half tuition for a 24 and full for I think 25 or 26 and above. However, some websites aren’t specific enough for me to know…

There are some schools listed in this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships.html</a>

where you would qualify for full tuition. You need to get your score up a bit for a full ride. However I don’t see one in NC.

Ok. Thank you.

A lot of schools that might give you a nice award would not appear on such lists as they do not automatically give out any money. They want to do so at their discretion and not be bound by any charts. Also a lot of schools will give dollar amount awards rather than full tuition or full rides.

Some years ago, there were a lot more schools that would have been on BobWallace’s list, but they have gone the discretionary route rather than giving up front guaranteed money. But they still may be very good bets for getting sizeable awards. As I mentioned, my one son did get a nice award that came out to be full tuition for a school. Another got an award that was not quite full tuition but a round dollar amount close to it. Neither award would show up as guaranteed.

Do talk to your high school counselor and see where kids have been getting some nice awards in past years from your high school There are often some regulars that the GCs would know.

What MS school is that?

BTW…for clarity purposes, a full tuition scholarship isn’t a “full ride.”

Sounds like Jackson State.

Oh, see that’s my mistake…well what is the difference? The school is Jackson State University. They also have a fee waiver for out of state students that I missed by one point on the ACT…I think. However, even though my ACT wasn’t the best…by my PSAT’s, I have a chance of making their requirement for the SAT, which is around 1130 for reading and math. So…

The cost of attending a school includes not only tuition, but also room, board, fees, books, travel, and personal expenses. If the scholarship you are interested in covers only full tuition, you will still be responsible for the other fees (which can easily approach 10k/yr).

Full Ride : Tuition, room, board, books, fees.

Full Tuition: Tuition. ( you have to pay for room, board, books, fees, etc.)

Are you a junior or senior? If you’re a junior then do apply to JSU next year. Get your app in early as there is a scholarship deadline.

What was your PSAT? You may become a National Achievement scholar.

Really? Oh wow, I have to really look into this…but I think it did say something about that.
