Full Rides for National Merit Finalists/Scholars

Suzy - M2CK is not employed by Bama. She has 2 sons who attended (one still there, one in grad school) I believe that both of them were NMF’s. While she does spend a lot of her time pushing the merits of Bama she also spends A LOT of time answering many other questions including the NM process questions. You would do well to pay very close attention to what she has to say. I have been lurking on these boards for about 6 years now and she knows what she is talking about.

I would say that she is easily one of the most valued contributors on CC.

I second what Memphis Guy just said.

If you can “third” what someone says, then count me in, m2ck is a most valuable resource…one that we value on the UA board…Roll Tide

Oh my…thanks guys. lol

:)

Haven’t seen anyone update this info yet–but Wright State University near Dayton Ohio offers full tuition for NMSF and full ride for NMF and University of Kentucky just upped their offer this year to full ride for NMF–including $2000 to study abroad and an ipad 2. They are redoing their honors dorm and it’ll be new in 2013. My daughter has them in her top 3.

Oh man, I have to apologize for what I posted a few months back. I hadn’t been on much before then and didn’t have a good feel for the lay of the land.

m2ck - I sincerely apologize.

No…biggie…I wasn’t offended.

:)

I heard M2CK was Nick Saban’s best recruiter. No wonder they win so many titles ;)

Boy, if that were true, I should be getting a commission!

However, I did hear Nick Saban give a speech where he said that Alabama has become one of the hottest schools to attend. Within the last few years, the apps have risen about 300%.

Mom2CollegeKids,
In a post in December you said the following:

“NONE of those schools require you to name that as “first pick” at this point. You don’t have to name one as “first pick” until MAY 1 of your SENIOR year!!!
Right now, your pick can be undecided or whatever! Those schools will not expect you to name a first pick now. NO SCHOOL requires you to name a first pick this early…NONE!!!”

Can you tell me where you found this information? Looking at the NM Corp website it seems like my S would have to select a school next month even though he’s only a Junior.

This is from the NM website:

http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf

Finalists are not chosen until your senior year.

“Can you tell me where you found this information? Looking at the NM Corp website it seems like my S would have to select a school next month even though he’s only a Junior.”

If I remember correctly, NMC is asking students if they want to name 2 schools that NMF will contact and let those schools know that your child is one of the 50,000.

That is NOT naming the school that the child will attend. That is just an “expressing interest” opportunity.

NMFs do not have to name a first choice school until May 1st of senior year. Some schools ask that you name them in Jan/Feb, but again that is during SENIOR year.

It wouldn’t be reasonable for NMC to require students to name an absolute first choice by junior year. If that were so, why would NMF scholarship schools bother to do recruitment mailings during senior year if decisions were made junior year.

Thank you wemel and Mom2.

The NMCorp student guide says this junior year selection of two schools is optional, but it says nothing about selecting a first choice as a senior. So I was confused (see log in ID). It did seem ridiculous to make a choice as a junior.

So this is just an opportunity to say to two schools, “look at me, I’ve done well and made the first cut”.

In the link above, there is a blurb for current seniors…

March 1 through May 31, 2012: A Finalist who has reported a sponsor college as first choice by March 1 will be included in the first group referred to that institution for scholarship consideration. Periodically NMSC will notify sponsors of additional Finalists who have reported (by May 31) the college or university as their first choice.

However, many schools require a May 1st date (or a few weeks earlier), so maybe that’s why a firm date isn’t on the website or handout???

Anyway…right now you can just show interest. At this point, there are 50,000 who are still in the competition. That will narror to 16,000 in Sept…and then 15,000 next Feb.

For now, if your child desires, he can just put “undecided.”

S just received a full tuition (4 year) offer from Westminster (Salt Lake City) for NMF.

Just passing this on. We’ve never heard of the school, but perhaps someone on CC would be interested :-).

I have ACT=31. Do you know what is require for Case Westen’s scholarship?

YUJIE: I looked at Case’s website and didn’t see details of score-based scholarships listed.

If you go to their financial aid section, you can use their “net price calculator”–which includes merit and need-based aid. Enter your/your parents’ info. to get an estimate, or email their financial aid office(financialaid@case.edu) with your question.

(Adding this list here as well as the other thread, since people are using both.)

Posting this in both NMF scholarship threads…Change from past years!

Oklahoma City University is now offering full tuition for NMF not a full ride. This change begins with the HS Class of 2013. You can see the two different requirements for last year and this year’s application process here:

[Oklahoma City University : Financial Aid](http://www.okcu.edu/financialaid/scholarships/undergrad/)

NMFs now get the Trustee scholarship along with those who have scores > 33 on ACT or 1470 on SAT AND >3.6 GPA.

Texas Tech has unfortunately discontinued the NMF scholarship. It used to be an automatic $100K over 5 years (essentially a full ride), and now it is zero.
