My daughter earned a full ride at University of Michigan: Stamps Scholarship,$10,000, School of Nursing, $10,000, Honors program $2,000 for a total of $22,000 each year.

mamac, did you daughter have to do some kind of test, speech, presentation as was mentioned above? I see scholarship opportunities mentioned a lotm and I was wondering how people earned them - what hoops one has to go through to get them.

mamac's D is a very good student who is going into a field that needs students (nursing). Her D was very fortunate, but those kinds of opportunities are out there. Many schools automatically consider all applicants for certain scholarships ... no hoops to jump through! Other schools have separate apps, competitions, etc. for certain merit scholarships. You just have to check out the info for each school.

You don't need separate application for most of the merit scholarships at UMich. But there aren't too many for OOS. mamac's D is in-state. For OOS, Stamps scholarship with 100% matching form individual college/school only covers 2/3 of UMich's OOS tuition. D's school matches 120%, and with some outside scholarships, it is still not enough to cover UM tuition. The best UM scholarship for LSA students are Shipman. Since D is not a student in LSA, she was not considered. D has wonderful stats (4.0 gpa, 2320 sat), but I doubt even that is enough for Shipman.

For English & Music , how about BELOIT in WI., HIRAM & DENISON & WOOSTER in Ohio for a combination of need-based & scholarships ??

My current fav LAC has a great music program and has terrific fin aid, but remember: you can't use your federal or state monies there... at all. Their endowment is fantastic for a school that small. Within about 3 hours of Chicago, I think.

My D is OOS and attending UMich as a Shipman scholar. 50 kids are invited to the scholarship interview weekend, 15 get a full ride of approx. 40k and 35 get 26k. Part of the money is from the Shipman foundation and part is from the school (LS&A, Engineering, etc.).

There used to be a Michigan Scholar Award of 15k for underrepresented minorities and states, but with Prop whatever, they literally stopped giving it out midway through last year's admission process. Of course the schools still have their scholarships (eg. LS&A Dean's is 5-20k).
