Full scholarships chances?

Hey guys. I really want to go to WashU, but if I was lucky enough to even get accepted, the only way I can attend probably is if I can get myself a full or nice partial scholarship. I know the university offers several programs university wide, and also programs for specific departments. I am a dedicated varsity athlete, but my community service is average. I help at a hospital - but I'm very busy with my sport - and I also help at sporting events. Nothing special. I've read the application process for the scholarship programs and they all seem heavily geared towards community leadership. Would I have any chance in winning one of these awards, or are they mainly going to kids who have started charities, have 1000+ hours of service, made a significant change for their community, etc.?

Nobody-- not even any of the highly qualified candidates–has a favorable chance of being accepted. Based on your description of your situation, I would say you’re probably not what they’re looking for. But you should reply regardless (at least if you can afford it–I do not know for sure if it costs money to apply for scholarships but I can only assume so.)

I was in the exact same situation as you; I knew I couldn’t attend WashU without a hefty scholarship, but I really didn’t see myself as a good candidate for any of programs. But since I was so in love with WashU, I applied to every program I was eligible for. To my eternal surprise, I was selected for one of the scholarship programs, and could not be any happier to be a WashU student now. As RaVNzCRoFT stated, nobody has a favorable chance (there are a huge number of applicants); but luckily, some people have to be chosen and if you put a lot of effort into your scholarship applications, you could be one of them. Good luck!

As a last note, (with the exception of extra postage) it does not cost additional money to apply for scholarships.

That’s great to hear tumble. I will definitely still be applying and putting effort into the scholarships. It’s just tough to know you’re going against some crazy talented kids. I’m sure you did something quite substantial during high school right?

I have basically the same story as tumbletiger009. Just apply to as many as you can. (And I definitely did not do anything exceptional during hs. I think that every once in a while, they screw up and someone gets lucky.)
