I want to know what are the requirements for getting a full scholarship in Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. I want to major in Aeronautical Engineering.
There are no full scholarships to these schools. They only provide need based aid. At Stanford, your ability too pay will be a factor in admissions
Harvard and Stanford have over all admission rates of 5% The number of acceptances for international student is very small
But their sites say that it is possible if the student is special. I do not want to put a limit to those schools because I want t learn in one of the top 10 universities in the world, the universities that are in the Ivy league.
There are many students that are U.S.citizens/permanent residents that want to do the same thing that you want to do. Most of them also consider themselves special. However, for the overwhelming majority of you, that is highly unlikely that getting admitted going to happen.
You need to make sure that if you want to study in the U.S. that you will have some affordable options, where you stand to have a good chance of getting accepted.
There are no merit scholarships at all at those schools, even if you are special. The website does not say that.
If your ability to pay is zero, you may get full financial aid from some top 10 schools, if you can show that you need it. (BTW Stanford (and MIT) are not Ivy League.)
Please understand that we see these posts a lot here, and it is never clear of the international student posting really understands that:
-Their chances are extremely slim bc, contrary to what the rest of the world may tell you, there are tens of thousands of students in the US who are just as or more qualified, accomplished (special) as you. Kids in the US are not dummies compared to the rest of the world…
-College here is extremely expensive ($60k and up per year) and these school give no $ based on your qualifications, at all, ever. You must have financial need.
-International students often face an acceptance rate MUCH lower than US kids, which is already 5-8%.
-No one ever says “I want to study in the US, where can I get in and get full scholarship”? That question we can help you with. If you are limited to Harvard or Stanford, and you want to attend for free, well, I’m not saying “Don’t bother”, but…
Well…first Harvard does not offer this major. MIT has aerospace engineering but not aeronautical engineering.
Stanford has the major.
Your first, challenge would be to get accepted. These schools accept 5% of international applicants. That means 95% do not get accepted.
Second…MIT and Stanford are need aware for international students. This means your financial, need will be considered when your application for admission is reviewed.
Third…you would need tippy top GPA,with an aggressive courseload in HS, plus outstanding SAT or ACT scores…and a TOEFL score,if your native language isn’t English. You will also need something in your application that makes you stand out from all of,the thousands of others who apply with tippy top stats.
I would strongly suggest you focus your college search on something other than the rankings of the schools. In addition, I would suggest that you look at affordable options in YOUR country.
What makes you think you are special?
I know about the range of scores that they want but I need more information. I know I am special because I have studied abroad in many other countries. By the way I am Egyptian. I am not acting arrogant but that is what I hear. My GPA is straight 4.0 and that is the maximum in Egypt. My NEW SAT scores are within 1450 to 1550. TOEFL is not problem. I am involved in many extracurricular activities. I am soccer player in the Egyptian league and in my school team as well. I have many medals with both. Over that I traveled to Spain and several clubs wanted me to sign but I couldn’t due to my age and nationality. I am an international student and I am in a culture exchange program. I am at the best community service organization in Egypt. I have went to a couple of International MUN conferences in NY and Dublin. I also participated in many national ones. I participated as a chair too in one MAL conference in Egypt. So I think my chance is big both academically and in sports.
I hope the sports part helps you if you can get recruited.
I don’t think you sound arrogant at all. Don’t worry about that. But do please understand that there are probably 1000s of kids that can say the same thing as you with your activities, who have a 1600 SAT. And people tell them they will definitely be accepted all the time. But they are not.
Just be aware of your realistic chances here. You may very well be accepted! But the only $ is for financial aid.
You sound as if you have the background to have a chance, but no one’s chances are big when it comes to those schools.
Why did you give the SAT score as a range? Have you taken it yet, or are you referencing practice tests?
Your first step is to research which schools have your intended major. As referenced above, two of the three you mentioned do not. Princeton might – I know they have aerospace, but I’m not sure about aeronautical.
There are other schools in the US that would give you a great deal of merit, but they are not Ivy League. Why is that so important to you?
Thank you I understand. This is the problem, the $. Now a dollar is worth 20 Egyptian pounds so if you do the maths of any university, the number would be really huge.
What price (in USD) can you afford per year?
For my SAT. I think you heard about the cancelled chance of October. We took the test and it was cancelled after. Many innocent students and I am one of thousands were unfairly taken with the decision. My score o that exam was 1540. As a result of the cancellation, the punishment was that the December trial was the hardest ever to reach Egypt. For practice I solve more than tests a day and all the tests are official and real but I did not see those types of questions before.
That stinks! When will you have a score? Or do you have to take again?
I prefer not to say because the number would be small and my parents and I are from the middle class so the number I expect my parents to pay is big in my currency but by dollars the amount is small.
So you will need substantial financial aid, let’s just say, right?
The best thing to do is to look at several schools that meet financial need for international students, and are need blind for them. Those schools will admit you based on merit, and regardless of how much you might need. If you apply to several, you may have a better result than just 1.
Thank you very much for your support. I hop you can help me in the research too because it seems that you experience is higher than mine. And of course I must enter SAT again
What is your desired major? University of Alabama offers guaranteed merit aid based on stats. Not income.
Are there NO colleges in Egypt where you could study? You should include those on your list as well.
remember the Ivies do not give athletic or merit scholarships
It is unclear if the OP wants to (or is eligible to) play soccer in college. That would change things financially too if he could get an athletic scholarship and pair it with merit.
The schools he listed do not give athletic scholarships…except Stanford.
