Fun at AU?

got accepted today and I’m psyched to go bc of outstanding academics etc.
but I have a few questions
how is nightlife at AU? I know it’s a dry campus but is it really inconvenient to go out and party? cuz I wanna work hard but play hard too.
Is AU completely secluded away from thr city? Or are there things to do around/ right outside of campus that are easy to access? Is it even IN th city or like a little town? Or a mix of both
Are there many 18+ activities and many parties? And if there are parties, are they ridiculously far from AU so it’s not even worth making the effort to casually go out on a Thursday night or something? Or is it in walking/short drive away
I just wanna know if I’m gonna have some fun (and not in the “hey let’s go to the art museum sense”) if I go here. sorry for so many questions, it’s just making th choice to go here easier for me.

AU is definitely not secluded. It is in the northwest quadrant of Washington DC, and the campus is a free bus ride (or a walk) away from the Tenleytown area, which has stores, restaurants, etc. There is also a Metro subway stop at Tenleytown that can take you practically anywhere in DC (and also into MD and VA).

AU’s location is great because you’re in the city, but it doesn’t feel like the city when you’re on campus. My son (current AU freshman) doesn’t party, but he says that some people on his floor often go out to parties, while others party occasionally, and others don’t party at all. It all depends on personal preference. As far as I know, the parties are a bit of a distance away from campus, but not terribly far.

There are a lot of really out of control parties with themes like “Is Sequestration Really Bad” and “If Eric Cantor and Nancy Pelosi Had a Love Child”. Animal House it ain’t but from what I gather they have their share of partying.

More partying seems to occur among those students in the South Side dorms (Anderson, Letts, Centennial) as compared to the North Side dorms (Hughes, McDowell, Leonard). AU claims that’s a myth (they told us that at Eagle Summit last year), but from what my son tells me (he’s in Hughes currently), the North side dorms are definitely calmer than South side.

My D is in Anderson. Seems like parties are around if you want that but it’s not a problem if you don’t. Lots to do in DC for all interests.

AU parties hard. During the first semester I went out at minimum 3 or 4 nights a week. Not the best idea for my GPA, but it was a good time haha
Do we go as hard as some place like FSU or WVU, no, but we’re also going to get jobs when we’re done with college. If you’re not into the party scene, that’s totally fine too because not everyone is.

I’m pretty sure the mods here wouldn’t really like me to go into too much more detail, but if you’re concerned about the party scene at AU (which was one of my biggest concerns when I came) feel free to message me and I’ll do my best to answer any questions you have.
