So besides prereqs and breadth courses, I'm a little lost on what classes to take to fill my schedule up to the 13 unit minimum. What have been some really fun classes you guys have taken at Cal and with what professors? Or what classes would you recommend I take? :] Thank you!

By the way, has anyone ever had philosophy 12a with Warren? I'm interested in taking the class but I've been hearing really bad reviews about the professor.

Honestly, that kind of depends on what your interests are. It’s really hard to find a universal class that everyone loves at Berkeley.

If you’re interested at all in politics (don’t have to be a Political Science major) I hear Pol Sci 179 is great. They have a bunch of great guest speakers ranging from politicians to other political figureheads (I think Jon Stewart or Steven Colbert came at one point). Only 1 unit though.

Also, Robert Reich’s class on Wealth and Poverty is apparently great. It’ll probably fill up really fast though, so you would have to Phase I it. Good for people interested in Public Policy, Politics, Development, mabe Econ, etc.

^ To the above question, that depends. Do you already have some basic knowledge of Hindi (just throwing this out there because a lot of Indians speak Hindi or something similar to Hindi at home like Punjabi)? I’m guessing not, considering the way you phrased your question, but just making sure. I’m taking Hindi, and I did it for pretty much the same reason you did, but I let me tell you right now: it’s not easy. It’s a daily class, so a lot of assignments and a lot of nightly work. The instructor, Lila-ji, is not as bad as everyone makes her seem to be, and she’s actually quite helpful, but she has high expectations and you’ll need to put a lot of effort in the class to get an A. I think learning Hindi is rewarding, but it’s not an easy, really fun, no-effort class. If you wanted, you could always take it P/NP if you just want to learn the language without the pressure of getting a good grade.

I can understand Hindi but I can’t speak it. I really do want to learn it though. And the average grade is an A- so could it really be that bad?

If you really want to learn Hindi, I would say go for it, just understand that you will have to put in a fair amount of work, and you might/probably could get an A, but it won’t be a really easy A (also, the average grades on courserank are deceptive, just saying). Also, to be fair, I’m in the intermediate Hindi class with Lila-ji; I didn’t take Hindi 1A with her, but I’ve talked to people in my class who took the beginners’ level class, and they said it was a lot of work. Not many people continued onto intermediate for that very reason. Also, keep in mind that you might be graded a little more critically because you do understand some Hindi coming into the class. All in all, seems like you want to learn Hindi, so I would still say that you should take the class.

I think I’ll try it for a few weeks. If I don’t like it, I’ll drop it. If the workload is lots of grammar worksheets, essays, and random writing then I don’t think I’ll have too much of a problem with it. I really enjoyed learning Spanish in High School.

i took 1a with lilaji as well last fall. got an A-. that little lady is one hard-ass. lols

not bad class. most of the grammar is fairly logical and straightforward. i think the harder part if the extensive vocab lists she’d give out and memorizing the genders for the words. that part sucked.
