I've always heard people talk about their college experience of classes in trampolining or rock and roll history. I also always wanted to study a small amount of random stuff like piano or fencing. So what kind of random/fun classes does UT offer?

I took tennis, two semesters of astronomy, and racquetball for fun. Very different from my engineering classes. I enjoyed all of them. I would love to go back and take astronomy again, since they’ve learned so much the past 25 years!

I’m in Astronomy 307 now. I don’t think it is that fun. I thought it would be, but not so much in reality.

LOL. I would not classify astronomy as fun. I was lucky and had Don Winget for 301 who is supposed to be one of the best astronomy profs at UT and it was pretty boring. I knew people who were in other 301 classes and they were basically taking a math class that happened to mention planets sometimes. My friend went on to 309 and it’s really difficult.

I took a class on WWI - Present day war movies and I thought it was fun. There was very little work and lots of movie watching. ;D There’s a class on Grimm Fairy Tales but that might end up mega hard or something.

That is funny! I even thought about switching majors to astronomy!

ballroom dancing

Rock and Roll history is not as fun as you would think… just a warning.

in response to ampzor, what other fun classes would you recommend that could fill that arts requirement? cause I sure don’t want to take art history :P

Jeptha > Don’t take art history, at least with Dr. Sally Coleman, please. I don’t anyone else to suffer like me.

I am also looking around to take some fun classes & here’s one I took last semester but had to drop because of schedule conflicts. Human Sexuality (EDP 363-3) with Professor Brownstein (he’ll make you laugh your arse off for the first hour and give notes for the last 15 mins at the podium). I am trying to retake that class next fall but all sessions are closed. Go to his office hours when school starts (when people usually drop) & he might add you.

yeahhh i took history and styles of rock and that class SUCKED. some of the more popular classes are scuba diving and human sexuality.

By the way, if any of you guys need notes for human sexuality for professor brownstein…i have em for the entire semester typed in a big pdf file. Lemme know if any of you guys need em.

Just a note, Ballroom Dancing is NOT an easy class and requires a lot of hard work and time but is a great way to woo the ladies…jk ;)

Here are some interesting classes that I enjoyed:

1.) Art History 303 with Dr. Ann Johns

2.) Information in Cyberspace a.k.a. i312 (made my own websites, plus a lot of athletes like Dexter Pittman take this class and its online based)

3.) Any of the 1 credit hours physical education classes (e.g. jogging, fencing, etc.)

lol, that’s why i’m asking, NXT, art history sounds SO boring, and I hear it’s pretty hard too. i was hoping to take history of rock and roll, but ppl seem to bash that too. is there ANY fun class that will satisfy my Fine Arts/Humanities elective? :P

@ Nxt I DO!!! please! im taking it over the summer.

Jeptha, Art History with Dr. Johns is not that bad, according to Pick-A-Prof 70% of the class makes As and its true. If you put in a little bit of your time you should make an A however it is not a true blowoff class (meaning you can screw around and still expect to wing it and make an A)

oh, and @jeptha, i heard the theatre classes are pretty easy for that fine arts credit.

@ Art History >> To be honest, its mostly about memorization. No matter how much notes you take, you end up making a review sheet and study off that and if you’re good at memorizing those long and weird artist names & paintings, then you’re better off. Personally, I’ve observed that there are a lot of girls in art history and even though its a myth that girls are good at memorizing, it might still apply to an extent and I just think they are screwing up the A’s averages on pickaprof. Bottom line, if you’re good at memorization, you’ll be fine. If not, you’ll struggle. at least w/ Coleman who teaches most sessions.

@ msolo45 > pm me with your email address and I’ll send you the pdf file for the notes. Keep in mind that those notes are only for Brownstien’s human sexuality class. The notes are passed on from 07 or 08 I think but since I attended quite a few classes before dropping that course, I can tell you that even though the notes are a year or two old…they’re still pretty much word from word what you need to study for the exams.

I’m thinking about taking human sexuality, but it looks like the prerequisite is a behavioral science class, such as psychology. Do you think I can register for that class without previously taking psychology?

I would not recommend registering for a class without the prerequisite. It may let you but later kick you out. Other classes may be gone then. I wouldn’t try to work the system.

Good advice from Fiyero. I did that once and regretted it. Taking building plumbing design (I can’t remember the formal name of the class, but that’s what it was) before fluids was dumb!
