Fun, not competitive, summer MT programs??

The only thing with Long Lake is that the oldest campers are 16, right? The girl in question is going to be 18 in June, and is entering her senior year in high school. So I think LL is out.

Perry Mansfield update on the Summer Programs Discussion thread.

If cost is a consideration you might as well eliminate French Woods! While their program is wonderful is is VERY expensive (thousands of dollars). They do have SOME financial aid available though so you could always inquire.

Most, if not all, of the responses have mentioned "summer camp" type programs. Unless I missed something, has your friend considered a summer program offered by a college/university? Given the age and senior status of your friend's daughter next year, one of these might be particularly appealing - great MT experience with a taste of college life. And if the daughter is contemplating applying to a MT program for college, attending a summer program at a school she is interested in provides both the opportunity to get a real taste of the department and also enables the faculty to get to know a student as a performer and their work ethic much more in depth than 5 minutes of monologues and songs and a 3 minute chat at an audition.

Of the 2 college related MT programs my daughter attended, University of the Arts 4 week summer program might meet your friend's criteria. Non-audition based admissions, rigorous training but a very supportive, nurturing, noncompetitive enviroment. Plus the opportunity to live in the dorms in Philadelphia right in the center of the performing arts district (which is also in the heart of the business district and a very safe enviroment as long as a student exercises common sense).

My daughter attended the the program during the summer of 2005 and loved it. She formed friendships that have endured to date. The cost at the time was $2100 for tuition and about $600 for housing. There are no meal plans but each dorm room is a converted apartment with a kitchen and kids cook their own food and frequent a variety of reasonably priced eateries within a 3 block radius popular with students. UArts website offers a lot of info under summer programs. Applications become available in January for the upcomong summer.

Hope this is helpful.
