fun post

I know sometimes the parents on this forum wonder what their kids can really do and if we can really handle it all. I know my mom is always worrying that i have too much on my plate. But, when we want something bad enough, i promise that we know how to get it done.

recently i was one of three directors for a broadway revue at my school. Everything was done by students, and consitering the fact that our school is less than theatre friendly, i thought we did a good job.

here's a video of our closing number, the ever over-used seasons of love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1PCGEZYKtg&eurl=

I didn't think the show was going to even get off the ground. So main message: we really can do it all. and since everyone seems to be so stressed over college, i thought it was a good idea to remind us of why we do what we do.

Bravo simplywicked!! My d was part of a communty theater that was started and directed by high school drama students for two years...some of the best times of her acting life!! It was incredible to see how everything came together. It was a lot of work, but the respect level was always there...and the productions were wonderful!! It was very easy to forget that it was totally put together by STUDENTS!! Everything from Cinderella to Drood, with a few revues inbetween. When the students graduated, last year, they donated anything in the account to another local theater group. My d is a year younger than the directors, so she has missed them greatly. Great job! I know it was a major undertaking, but I am sure you and the rest of the students, enjoyed it tremendously.

There is a student run theatre company at my school known as Second Stage. We put on a production of Crimes of the Heart in February (I played Lenny) and are currently in rehearsals for Picasso at the Lapin Agile (I'm playing Germaine). We took at big, empty room in our school, painted it, created sets, costumes, hung lights, raised funds... everything by ourselves. A lot of people thought we would never get it off the ground, but we did, and to rave reviews. (and over 1000$ profit in the company account!)

_simplywicked is right. We do get stuff done when we want it bad enough, when we are passionate enough about it.

-Mikksmom's D

Thanks- I loved it.

I hate to admit it, but since I am becoming a weepy almost empty nester, I have a few tears running down my face. The passion of the kids really comes through on the video. That was great.

simplywicked - thanks for sharing this! My d's school produced an original musical this weekend, written by two students and directed by a student..."Hobo Heaven"- It was the best production I've seen at the school! What amazing talented kids!

SimplyWicked...BRAVO!! I enjoyed the video but also I could tell from your post the work and collaboration that went into this and the significance that the production was student led. I know it had to be a huge undertaking and you must feel such gratification and a sense of accomplishment in pulling it off.

I can relate (though am a parent). Our HS never had had any student run productions. Like you, my D in tenth grade and then again in eleventh spearheaded such a production that she created/wrote, directed, musical directed, choreographed and produced. For all involved, it was truly a success and went over very well in our community. They raised a lot of money for charity as well. It hasn't been done since she left the school but I hope someone is able to pull it off in the future with other students. I know that the students involved felt possibly more pride in that endeavor than when they were in the musicals put on by the school (by adults) because they were responsible for every aspect. I agree with you that if kids have a passion, the things they can accomplish are limitless. For my D, the musical revues she created, coordinated, and led were her most significant accomplishment in her own mind of anything she had done prior to college. She has done things like this since then but it is always really cool when it is the first time, and the first time it was ever done at a school. Now, my D is musical director for Into the Woods at her college, a completely student run production. Having done this kind of work in HS and since then, she really wanted to get involved in student run productions in college. I don't know when you are heading off to college but when you do, you may want to continue this kind of thing at your college because you have accomplished it before and can now take it to the next level. I encourage you to give it a try.

In any case, I enjoyed the excerpt of your finale and what a perfect song to end the show! It is very special to see a show that is run by the students and I imagine your community was full of pride for all the students involved!

one of my FAVORITE songs, fabulous!

That's really cool simplywicked. At my high school, we just finished a completely student-run production of "Into the Woods' and it was a HUGE success. We made over $3000!!! But our school doesn't have the resources to put a musical on every year but a lot of us wanted one this year because we had a lot of talent leaving. So we formed a club and raised the money and built the sets and made the costumes, etc. and it was so much fun. I played Cinderella's Prince and I codirected the show. It was one of the most stressful, yet enjoyable times of my whole life. If anyone has the chance to work in a completely student-run show, I strongly suggest that you do it. It teaches you so much about theatre that you'd never know simply as an actor. But congrats to everyone who hs worked on one; I know how hard it is to pull together.

Danimal88...congratulations to you as well for pulling off this feat and for the success of it. A student run production in HS of Into the Woods is an enormous underataking and it sounds like a resounding success. I bet you were a great Cinderella's Prince. I love the Agony number! I hope you will think about doing something like this again in college! You are right about the learning experience that such an endeavor can be for all involved. There is a different sense of achievement when you have done it all yourselves. Bravo to you!
