College of Wooster is one that hasn't been mentioned that might be a good fit. For reasons I can't quite put my finger on, I think Earlham might be good too. I agree with the Eugene Lang and Bard suggestions.

Not too sure of Wooster's creative writing strength but both of those are excellent suggestions.

Funny, he mentioned Earlham after reading one of the guide books, might have been CTCL.

Thanks again for the suggestions and help!

Wooster and Earlham are both wonderful schools but not particularly good/strong for creative writing. You will have to compromise on the open-curriculum criteria. Consider, as others have suggested: Goucher, Beloit, Knox (not as alternative, but great creative writing); or Bard, Bennington, Marlboro, Hampshire, depending on the type of funky. These are all LACs of varying sizes, the smallest being Marlboro.

SBMom- How is his class rank?
I am going to PM you with some questions about his high school. We need to make a decision for next yr and would love some feedback on the competitive nature of his high school.

Beloit has been mentioned in a string of names with other schools. Take a closer look, as it has much of what you're looking for. Individualistic student body, a well thought of major in creative writing, less of a reach than some other schools. My D went initially due to the creative writing major, but she has branched out in a variety of other directions. She is quite happy there.
