Furious with current college..looking for change.

Hello! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far. So here's the deal...

I go to a highly ranked private school in Texas that has been a good experience so far (minus the HUGE population of frat bros that saturate the campus) and I've been having issues getting credit for my...well..previous credits. I've been at this school for two years and am up to 86 credit hours. I earned 24 credits from Regis University in Denver, Columbia College (while deployed, which include two years of Arabic in ARAB I and ARAB II), and University of Maryland-University College (while deployed again, Columbia wasn't available there). I was told that I would only get 4 credits for military service and then I could present my ACE transcript later to get those applied towards my core credits. Even my credits from regionally accredited schools were applied to only "general electives". I understand that it's the university's prerogative to accept or deny any credits, but while in the admissions process I was told otherwise. Now I'm looking to head closer to home due to some of my older family members passing away.

Should I leave (a college that rhymes with mee-see-you) to go to a college in the south? I'm looking at Auburn, Alabama, UAB, LSU, U of West Florida, and Mississippi State. All of which seem to be a lot more supportive of military students. I plan on earning my masters at the same school as well. Thank you for any feedback!

Every time you transfer, you run the risk of losing credits, and many, many schools want those last two years of credits, especially the last 30, to come from just them. I had a friend who transferred so many times and changed majors so many times, he had over 200 credits by the time he finally got his BS. Don’t be him! If you want to transfer, this is probably your last chance before you get severely dinged again, and even then, you need to lock in before you officially transfer what is going to count.

Personally, if money weren’t an issue, I’d advise you stick out your last 3 semesters or so and just get your BS/BA, but I understand wanting to go home in your circumstances as well.

FINISH THERE @ mee-see-you. You already have quite a transfer record, and some organizations or graduate schools might see that as a “not-so-good” pattern. So, seems like you have 3 or 4 semesters to go, so DO it and then look for prestigious graduate schools at the location that you find best fitting for your situation.
best of luck to you.

Most people lost something when transferring. Your upper level courses may only transfer as electives and not as credits towards your major. Some may not transfer at all. If you have had two good year at your school, should consider staying. However, if you do transfer, make sure you get a degree in your chosen field because some departments limit transfers.

Pick up the phone and talk with the people at UMUC. Find out if they offer your major. You already have some credits from them, and they do accept up to three years of transfer credit from 4 year institutions. That could be your fastest route to a degree at this point.

Wishing you all the best!
