woo hoo! Congratulations!

I’m so glad that D ended up with decent merit without scores. I hope that means her application is appealing even without them.

I like the video the kids see when they log into their decision. So pretty there!

Congrats to your D! Hopefully our girls will continue the good news band wagon through March!

Yes! TO continues to prove itself no barrier in admissions or merit. Your D and so many others are proving that.

I like the video too. And the personal P.S. My D’s mentioned her love of theater and hoping to see her on stage. We’ve only had one other school personalize the decision letter that way. It is a nice touch.

I think that’s part of Furman’s deal. They tell the AOs to write a ps. D’s was about her common app essay. It’s a nice touch but I think they do it for everyone.

Yes, they do it for everyone (as does Case Western.) I just think those little extras are nice to see in this crazy process and crazier year.

ETA: I’ve heard some schools add a handwritten note. We have not seen that.

Acceptance for my son today, with a $35,000/year Townes Scholarship. Woo hoo!!! Very exciting for me as a homeschool mom graduating my first! :grinning:

Is anyone getting the Townes test optional?

@homerdog I could be reading too much into this but it sounds like those with the Bell Tower are in consideration for the James B Duke. No mention of Townes or Hollingsworth recipients. So fingers crossed for your D for even more merit. (I hope I’m not starting a conversation I regret as I have no knowledge of this other than what is in the description of the James B Duke.)

“Students selected as winners of these awards will receive this scholarship in lieu of any Bell Tower Scholarships previously awarded.”

From my knowledge, Furman will contact finalists for the James B. Duke (full tuition) in early February! I know the Duke has different criteria than the Townes/Hollingsworth, so I think anyone who got accepted is eligible for consideration for the Duke. Congrats to everyone else who got accepted!!

Hm. Just pulled up their website and took a look at that. Who knows? I guess those Duke scholarship finalists are notified in Feb.

They say that the Townes Scholarship recipients are “scholars from outside of South Carolina who have demonstrated a passion for helping others and making an impact in their communities.” D has done almost zero community service so I can see why she didn’t get that one.

He submitted SAT scores (1500)

My DD received $35 Townes scholarship in December 2020. We are so proud! I am also interested in how many Townes they offer every year to have a sense of how competitive it is. I also am curious if this means she will be contacted for the Duke or if it is an either/or scholarship. thanks for the support here!

My daughter was a Hollingsworth(in-state version of Townes). Very competitive. Originally there were 10 Townes chosen a year but it may be a few more now. In the past, the Duke was separate.

There’s more than ten of each chosen. We discussed above I think. They end up enrolling about ten of each but that means they have to give out more. Not everyone enrolls. Furman has about a 25 percent yield so maybe 40 of each given out.

Based on our experience in the recent past, I would estimate they would invite about 20-25 Townes and 20-25 Hollingsworth (substantially less for the Duke) each year for a scholarship interview weekend to compete for the awards but that seems to have gone away last year. The current Townes/Hollingsworth/Duke students would participate in the interviews of the prospective candidates during that weekend and the decisions would go out thereafter. Undoubtedly, Covid has changed the process but it had been changing before.
