Calling all former Junior Scholars! My daughter (rising senior) was just notified that she is a recipient of this scholarship. Of course we are hoping that she qualifies for more $$ over the coming months. I would love to hear personal experience or input from those of you who have already walked this path. What happens next? Will Furman begin to market to her differently? Or are they waiting to see how strongly she demonstrates her interest?
In another thread for the c/o 2022, I noticed that the follow-up money did not always seem logical based on test scores and GPA. Any advice/tips on what she can do in the coming months to improve her chances? (She was planning to visit again during an “accepted students weekend,” but that may be too late.)
My son received an offer of 22,500 three years ago, which is generous, but still puts the COA of over 35,000 a year. For the more lucrative Duke, Hollingsworth or Townes scholarships, there are additional essays required . Once the essays are read, Furman invites a limited number of students for an interview. When my son applied in 2016, 48 students were invited out of 1200 applicants. He attended a reception the night before, then attended interview day. There were 10 Hollingsworth awards and 10 Townes ( for OOS) awards and I believe 4 Duke awards. Furman is a CSS profile school. They are strict with deadlines, so you may want to check their website. Good luck.
My son received the Furman Scholar award this year too. We just visited and loved the campus. We are now in the process of researching the school and learning if this is the right school for him. He wants to do a senior overnight trip this fall.
Does anyone know what percentage of Furman Scholars is actually admitted if they apply? It sounds like a likely letter…
Not sure we’re going to be able to make the long trip to Furman before apps are due, but everything we’ve found online is exciting.
