Furman University Early Decision for Fall 2022 Admission

My son just expressed interest in Furman. He fits right in the middle with Furman’s GPA and SAT. He will pursue music scholarships. Does any anyone know what the average merit scholarship award is for incoming freshmen? Does an “average” student get much $$? We are in-state.

My understanding is that only a very small percentage of students are full pay at Furman. It is a great school.

Any idea what the average award is based off merit solely? Just trying to get an idea. I saw it’s 67k/year…

I’m not sure what their average is, but the admissions people are very helpful and can either answer that or get you to someone who can.

According to the school’s common data set on its website, the average non-need based merit award for the 2020-21 school year was approximately $20,500. Furman enrolled 514 students, 197 of which received merit aid but no need based aid. There were 257 enrolled students who were awarded some type of need based aid, 176 of those were awarded some type of non-need based aid as well.

You can find this type of information on almost every school’s website by searching “Common Data Set.” Lots of great information in those reports.

Thank you!

Just under half of the incoming class offered merit aid is quite generous. Certainly makes cost of attendance comparable to a good number of State schools for OOS candidates.

Not quite. My daughter received the Townes (which is the highest scholarship other than the handful of Duke full rides) and total cost will be $35,846. Our flagship comes in at a little less than $24k. But, with a student who really doesn’t want a huge school we are thrilled to have a really strong option at $35k.

Was referring to OOS rates for State flagships. Was looking at Penn State and Maryland. They’ve climbed significantly

Oh gotcha…I see that now! Sorry!

Does anyone know how many Hollingsworth or Towne scholarships are offered? Duke?

They award 8 Duke scholarships per year. I’m not sure how many for Hollingsworth and Townes.

I don’t know the exact number, but it isn’t very many. Furman does give lots of Bell Tower scholarships and there are also departmental scholarships.

According to the notes I took during our tour/information session, they award 8-12 students the Hollingsworth/Townes. I’m not sure if that meant 8-12 of each or 8-12 total between the two. Either way, a fairly small number.

Does anyone know what the criteria is for keeping the merit each year(required gpa)? Someone asked on our tour but there wasn’t a clear answer.

It looks like it depends on the scholarship. Not sure about the Bell Tower. Duke Scholarship requires 3.0 for renewal. Hollingsworth and Townes a 2.7. (At least according to this link.) Financial Aid - Furman University - Acalog ACMS™

Has anyone got notification about being selected for the Duke Scholarship interview.

Has anyone heard when the Duke scholarship invitations will be sent? Or if they already have?

I heard invitations are in the portals.
