Hello! I’m currently a senior and may be interested in Furman. I applied and don’t hear until March. I will be majoring in journalism, so I was wondering if anyone had any insight in regards to Furman and journalism? Also just any info you have about the school in general would be great! Thanks!
Furman is a great Southern LAC which is consistently ranked as one of the best Southern LACs in most publications. Greek life is prevalent on campus , but it is not necessary to rush in order to have a positive college experience. Rush occurs in the Spring. Furman is highly involved in the Greenville community. They have lots of study abroad opportunities. The campus is beautiful. I don’t know much about their journalism major, but my son and I have had the opportunity to attend 2 different Fall for Furman days and were very impressed by the main speaker from the Philosphy Department. He was amazing. Furman I technically has a Greenville address, but is about 25 minutes from the actual downtown of Greenville. Having a car on campus is optimal . Furman is located about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs from Charlotte, 2 1/2 -3 hrs from Atlanta. You can get to the beach and Charleston in about 4 hrs and to the mountains of Tennessee is about 2.My son has been accepted and it remains on his short list. The main negative I can identify is the fairly high cost of attendance , although they do have merit opportunities. Good luck.
I have 2 Ds that went to Furman. One was a Political Science major and went to law school. One was a Biology major and is in medical school. They were 5 years apart, both were involved in a lot of activities but different ones. So I can’t tell you anything about Journalism, but if you have questions about other aspects of the campus, campus life, activities, I’ll try to answer them.
I also have a student at Furman currently and one a recent graduate. There is no journalism school. Furman does have a fabulous communications department. My recent graduate was a double major with one being communications. She is working in an area that requires writing, media and other modes of communication. If your student wants to be strictly in journalism you may want to choose a school that has a strong J school. I would tell you my daughter had a fabulous education and much of her success in the working world she would attribute to her professors, their dedication to the students and Furman’s internship programs.
