Hi y’all,
My son will be moving into an unfurnished house this August. Any suggestions/experience as to the best (and reasonably inexpensive) way to get some things in there? Have been perusing craigslist already…

Well, here are a few…Ikea, Target, furniture outlet centers, upscale neighborhood yard sales, donations from family members or friends who have things sitting around they aren’t using…

^ thanks, coming in from way out of state complicates things, if it were here it would be easy :)

Yeah, I understand. That’s why we went with a furnished apartment. There’s Spiller Furniture on 15th Street, but I cannot speak to prices.:)

I rented from Aaron’s Rents when I was in grad school…then just paid it off…long gone now, but did the trick back then.

What do you need?

Will he be splitting common room stuff with a roomie?

We have an Ikea here in Atlanta. I’m not sure if there would be one any closer. I know a lot of folks from here just rent a small uhaul to get their Ikea boxes to Tuscaloosa – about a 3-1/2 hour drive depending on I-20 construction which is kind of brutal right now. But then you have to assemble it. We have a some pieces from there and even with the great prices I have found them to be sturdy and well made. I wonder if any graduating students ever try to sell furniture through Ebay, Craig’s List, or the local paper rather than moving it?

Freecycle is also a good option.

Doesn’t IKEA ship? If so, that would be easier then renting a UHaul and driving from Atlanta.

I really like Walmart Site to Store. They have better options than in their stores. I bought this futon for my son’s apt, which opens to a full size bed. He has it in his living room and guests have slept on it when needed. He really likes the fold-down drink holder. It’s not available in the stores…just online Site to Store.

For mattresses, I’ve found Sams Club to be reasonable.

I’ve read that Ikea’s shipping is outrageous. Many people do as you say and rent a UHaul. It is very inexpensive to rent a UHaul trailer one way which is what we will be doing for moving in this year.

I got him this table using Site to Store
[Better Homes and Gardens Autumn Lane Dining Table - Walmart.com](http://www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-and-Gardens-Autumn-Lane-Dining-Table-White-and-Natural/19515575)

And I ordered 2 matching chairs (they come in sets of 2) and the bench. I would have gotten 4 chairs and no bench, but he had a space issue.

I drive past Walmart.com many times on my way to Tuscaloosa…I think about you every time.:)

LOL…I do use the Site to Store a lot for things for my kids. I just include their name for “pick up” and all they have to do is show their ID…everything is already paid for.

The latest thing I got for them is the “baking pans” for toaster ovens. They really like them. They use their toaster ovens a lot.
[Walmart.com: Wilton Bake It Better Toaster Oven 4pc Bakeware Set: Kitchen & Dining](http://www.walmart.com/ip/Wilton-Bake-It-Better-Toaster-Oven-4pc-Bakeware-Set/20668714)

M2CK, the individual foil sheets they sell at Sam’s fit those baking pans well and make clean-up a breeze!

I would have loved to use Ikea but expensive shipping & they wouldn’t guarantee a specific ship date. I also looked into renting a cargo van, but all booked.

So leading company turned us onto their dad’s company. Already Furnished, I spoke to Addison. Purchased the whole bedroom and it will be set up prior to our arrival. I’m sure u could have saved some $$, but hopefully it is for 3 years.

Roommate’s are bringing most of the LR DR we will bring some smaller stuff.

But I am also paying for the conveniences of old mom not having to lift heavy furniture plus you can’t fit much in S’s VW.several ways

That would be the “apt leasing company” not leading.
iPad + treadmill = typos

We priced out H driving a uhaul & the extra plane ticket plus uhaul rental knocked out any savings. Plus we would have to pay for delivery to get it to our house. We don’t have any vehicles.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Overstock.com delivers furniture to your door for $2.95 flat shipping rate. Can’t beat that! I think shipping for the first order may be free. Some assembly may be required. Their prices are not outrageous but cost wise you may make out better buying used furniture on Craigslist.

beth’s mom…great idea. I have to go to Sam’s tomorrow…will pick 'em up.

Flea Markets are also a great place to furnish a college apartment cheaply. There is one in Bessemer, about 45 minutes from campus. Probably some others around as well. Look for yard sales, too.
