Furniture Question

For next year, D wants a bookshelf/hutch that will sit atop her desk. She’s going to be in Ridgecrest West. The housing website says the desk is 48"x24" I’m assuming that 48" includes the locking drawer unit, but they’re separate pieces, right? Can anyone confirm those measurements? Also, if anyone has found a bookshelf/hutch that works with those desks, I’d love to know where you got it. I guess if worse comes to worst and we can’t find anything we can build it as long as we have the measurements. Thanks!

the folding shelf from target works well. i think they have them at bed bath and beyond as well.

google folding shelf

Agree 100%, folds up and is in great shape going on year 3.

Thanks Mike! I found one that’s 28" wide, 11-1/2" deep and 37" high. Is that the one?

there are a few different ones available but those dimensions sound about right. : )

Beth’s mom, can you add a link if you find a foldable hutch? I got one for my older D last year at the Container Store, but they discontinued it.

Let me know if you find out if the 48" measurement is including the locking unit.

check amazon or target for “folding shelf”. i think they are all roughly the same size.

i just checked room details and the dresser is not the same size in all dorms.

if the locking unit is 12 wide, that would make the dresser 30 in some dorms and 36 in others.

If the desk length given for Ridgecrest West is 48", then the desk itself is probably 36". That would leave the bookshelf about 8" short, which isn’t so bad. I’m sure she could find something else to fill that 8 inches.

i think the dressers are 30 wide, so the 28 inch shelf would work on either one.

Anyone have a student in Ridgecrest West who would measure the desk for us detail obsessed moms?!

you could wait til your BB and take all the measurements you want! : )

the dresser is 36 wide. the locking thing is 17. this doesn’t add up to the published number, though.

oops - just got new info … in rcw dresser is 36. desk is 33.

We ordere two folding metal bookcase for son (13" x 11" x 45") from Walmart ( [Walmart Mobile](http://mobile.walmart.com/m/phoenix#ip/4-Tier-Folding-Metal-Bookshelf/16004932)) and combined them with a couple of 48" long wire shelf’s from HomeDepot to make son a bookcase hutch that fit on his dresser/ desk / locking cabinet all lined up to make a 78"'long study surface that fit all three pieces of furniture shoved together. Son loves it and it provide lots of storage/shelf space.

If possible, it would be helpful if people could post/share photos of what you are describing.

I don’t think the site lets us post pictures or send them via private message.

My student has a wire system like this one, [Wire Shelving 4 Shelves 72 H x 48 W x 18 D Chrome by Office Depot](http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/333558/Wire-Shelving-4-Shelves-72-H/?cm_mmc=Mercent-_-Googlepla-_-Furniture%20Filing_Storage_Shelving-_-333558)
and we cut plywood shelves to fit so smaller items do not slide through.
Added heavy duty casters to facilitate moving.

THis is just an example, I did not purchase from this store, it might have been Lowes…
