Further Review Required

Further Review Required is my application status. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I have a 4.2 weighted GPA and a 1960 SAT I score (I know it's on the lower side). They need my mid year report (which I got a 4.0 unweighted). Is further review required a likely no, or do they put that on any application that didn't send in a mid year report yet?

they put it on any application that’s not amazing. so the majority of people will get that message I think

okay thanks… I mean with my mid year report (I think it’s fine)… do you think this will help me to get in? Or could they still entirely reject me? Because if they didn’t like my application, couldn’t they have just rejected me?

well, i can’t say for certain. mine STILL says ready for review
but what i’ve read and can assume, the only applications that receive “Accepted” or “Rejected” without the Further Review Required are ones that are extremely exceptional or extremely unqualified.

the mid-year report, i think, is usually required because your freshman year isn’t looked at, so they need more grades to evaluate. thus why it is so vital (since they only look at test scores and GPA), your first semester of senior year is pretty much 1/5 of your GPA (non-freshman) anyways, so that’s a pretty big chunk

are your mid years supposed to be sent here ( http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/undergrad2010-11/mailing-address/</a> ) or to the admissions office (address on collegeboard)?

When people are posting their weighted and unweighted GPA’s, are they posting their cumulative gpa, or gpa just for their senior year? Because my gpa was not so high in my junior year…

my cumulative GPA is the 4.2, however my unweighted GPA for senior year so far (which would be put on the mid year report) is 4.0. But the cumulative GPA (either weighted or unweighted) is your average GPA for the three years in h.s.

I understand why McGill would want my mid year report, but I live in NY so our semester JUST ended and my mid year report wont be available to send until next Friday. I’m afraid that if I don’t send it immediately, they’ll just chuck me in the reject pile. And if they don’t chuck me, I’m afraid in the next two weeks they’ll accept more and more people, which is going to make them more strict when accepting people later on for each faculty.

Two years ago my son, who attends McGill now, was in the same position as jng9221 and he asked his GC to fax his first semester grades and also send the original by FEDEX.
He provided the prepaid FEDEX envelope.

Yeah, I called my GC today… they’re going to try to get my grades ASAP and fax them to McGill. I guess I’ll mail the mid year report as well, but I want to get them to review my application as soon as possible, because I feel like the longer I wait, the harder it will be to get in.

If the majority of the people get the “further review required” message, what do you think are the statistics that I can get in now?

i am in the same exact position as jng9221!!! i’m not sure exactly when this semester ends, i think some time next week, so should i have my GC fax it over? ASAP? my application also says ‘ready for review’, and i’m getting extremely nervous… two people already heard back from my school last monday, and both were rejected  at least they haven’t chucked me yet…

GPA: 3.67 UW
QPA (weighted GPA): 17.233 (highest QPA ever was 18.733)
AP Exams: AP English Literature-5, AP US History-5, AP French Language-4, AP Art History-5
SAT (CR,W,M): 720, 760, 690
ACT with Writing: 32
SAT IIs: French-730, US History-730, English Literature-700

my stats btw… they’re very low for mcgill, which is making me so nervous :/

Also have the message, also from NY, also just finished up the semester.

Will not pushing my GC to fax over my grades decrease my chances?! My grades probably won’t even be ready until the 4th!!!

I’m a US high school student
My unweighted GPA is about 3.65 (bad junior year)
SAT was 790 reading, 760 math, 740 writing
ACT w/ writing is a 34
5 APs, all 4s and 5s, with 3 more senior year
3.9 unweighted senior year gpa so far
I’ve been told that I have a decent shot at getting in, does anyone here agree or disagree?
P.S I am also “Further Review Required” but I have not been asked for a midyear report, and my school operates on trimesters.

Great test scores, so-so GPA. What happened junior year: hard courses, illness, family issues or goof off? Unless it was goof off, you may want to contact them and explain. I’d say send in mid years even if they don’t ask.

Which faculty? That affects your chances.

Family issues leading to lack of homework being done, basically. Faculty of science for biology

It may help to let the admissions office know that at all schools you applied to, no need to give details. Don’t word it as an excuse, rather indicate how you dealt with it and successfully bounced back.

In any faculty other than science and engineering, I’d say you have an excellent chance. In science, I’d say a good chance based on what I’ve seen in this forum.

derpderp2 Did you list a second choice in science? The Faculty of science - life science /biology is more selective than the Faculty of Science -earth science/physics. Yet the faculty of science has a common first year with the identical required classes for any major. I am told it is not difficult to switch between the majors. You might want to consider letting McGill know that you would accept earth science/physics as a second choice.
I believe there is something on the McGill website about switching majors.

Thanks for the advice everyone, and any more suggestions/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

got accepted today to faculty of agriculture. decision is pending with faculty of science

They’ve had my 1st sem grades since the 16th and my app still says “Further Review Required.”

One of my friends has gotten their acceptance already–I’m so scared!!! This is nerve racking… McGill is a bit of a reach for me.

Ok, so i was in the exact same situation as you guys yesterday. I just got in today. Further Review Required does NOT mean that you are not qualified, it means that your application is incomplete. Call the McGill office, find out what they need and send it off. I had a number of issues with mine, but by calling, they were able to sort it out and within the same day accept me into both schools. Also ask your GDC to call and see what is up. Do not stress (I was ****ting bricks for a month!). They are having a lot of trouble right now sorting out the Mid year reports, Ib predicted grades etc. The best thing to do is call if you have not revieved an admissions decision within 1 month of sending your mid year reports and supporting documents etc.
GOOD LUCK, hope to see you all next year!
