As above! This would be for our son’s sophmore year.
DD did some heavy tutoring (full time) one summer at Fusion in Southern CA 5 years ago. She enjoyed the one-on-one attention of patient and encouraging teachers in geometry, chemistry and Spanish. She was one of the few students who wasn’t attending year around.
Got the feeling that the success of going full time would depend on the team managing that specific location of the school and how experienced and stable the teaching staff was.
2 of her teachers were long-term members of the program; 3rd teacher was temporary and didn’t last full summer. Administration was stable that summer, but had changed by the next summer. She met some nice kids and made some friends and it helped her academic success in those classes when her school started up again in the fall.
Thank you! I looked at Fusion’s corporate website and the job postings for teachers indicate “teaching experience desirable” but not required. I also looked the “team” bios, and fewer than 30% of the “team” have actual teaching credentials. We’ve employed several tutors over the years for our son, and I know from personal experience that having a degree in a subject area (be it English or math, et al), does not qualify someone to teach the subject. A lot of the Fusion “team” bios seems to be personal fluff…and nothing which indicates their philosophies, approaches, or outcomes. I also contacted Fusion to ask about college acceptance rates and was told that they were too new to keep that info, which I find fairly amazing given that they were founded in 1989. I asked about training for “team” members and got a vague reply. All in all, I think our money is better spent searching care.com for teachers who do not want to teach full-time, but have teaching degrees and subject expertise, and creating our own individual homeschooling program.
Would agree they don’t sound viable at that location. DD’s previous location published great colleges the kids were accepted to on their local website each year.
DD is using a tutor through wyzant.com this summer for college managerial accounting class. Wonderful tutor who is taking her CPA exam soon. She also tutors h.s. math. We looked only at tutors who had been background checked, had lots of hours of tutoring and great reviews. A couple of those were in our price range. Good luck!
