Future Bearcats

Hey Pulsar,

Are you definitely going to Hotchkiss?

And congrats to Vivster for getting your mother to let you go. I am looking forward to meeting you all.

vivster, what made your mom change her heart?

As to pulsar, last I heard was he missed the 4/10 deadline too busy posting at CC. :D

Multitasking is soo cool.

@lexie101816, I couldn’t find any links on the website, but there will probably be more information about classes to choose in the packet of stuff we get at the end of this month. Don’t worry yet!

@hockeymom18, the Head of School was talking about how Hotchkiss is prepared to face the modern world in a speech at the end of the revisit day, and having all freshmen take humanities was mentioned in this speech. More about the humanities program is explained in the course booklet (the one that was in the acceptance packet), and I couldn’t find that online. I would suggest waiting for the end of April mailings as well.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help! :(

@martay Thanks. That answers exactly my question. I had read about it in the course catalog, and was excited for my D to take it, but I wasn’t sure if it was required. Also, I was confused as to how the kids take the 4 humanities classes, as well as math science and language classes all at the same time. But, if everyone is taking it, I am sure they make it workable. I also understand that the philosophy class is only twice weekly, so I am sure that helps.

They have more subjects but they meet less number of hours per subject each week so it’s almost the same as a regular HS course load.

Got it. Thanks.

Does anyone know much about the language programs at Hotchkiss? (French and Chinese in particular)

I am fluent in chinese, would like to learn french, and would also like to learn japanese just as an interest.

The language program at THS is excellent. My son had one year of German before he came to Hotchkiss. He could hardly speak a word of that langauge. After one year of German at THS, he was almsot fluent. What was the difference between his first year of German at his prior school and his second year of German at Hotchkiss? At Hotchkiss, the students and the teacher spoke only German while in class; at my S’s prior school, the students and the teacher spoke primarily English in class. Huge difference. I believe that all of the language classes at THS are taught like my S’s German class.

As for Japanese, I don’t think that THS offers this language. Few BS’s do. (PA is one exception here, I think.)

Would there be any other options to learn Japanese? (start a club, find a friend, etc.) or would it just be a waste of time? <- that’s what my mom thinks =(

Learning Japanese at THS will be tough because it doesn’t teach the language and, according to my son, there are no Japanese kids at THS currently. Still, there could be someone on campus who speaks Japanese and who would work with you. Your best route would be to call the school. It may be able to help you find a teacher. (I know that when my son applied to other BS’s two years ago, we told schools that my son wanted to take German and asked those schools that didn’t offer German if they could arrange German leesons for him. A couple said yes; most said no. In the end, no harm in asking.)

Would you recommend for me to learn a third language, French? (I am fluent for Chinese)

I’m hesitating because I think that I do better in the math/sciences… Chinese was easy for me to learn since it is kind of my native language, but I am not sure about French. I’d rather take more math/science/visual art courses than ‘try’ to learn French… but if I can master French in four years and travel to France (study abroad?) to study art or something, then I’d definitely take French. Otherwise I will continue with Chinese.

The more languages you can learn, the better, IMHO.

How would you compare the French and Latin program at Hotchkiss? (better teachers, more students involved, study abroad/travel)

I’m so glad I found this thread! I’m so incredibly excited to go to Hotchkiss, and it’s nice to get a feel for what my future classmates will be like. So yeah… awesome sauce.
