so i "claim"/think i want to be a doctor, but don't want to go into an accelerated med program in case i decide blood and guts aren't my cup of tea. what college has a good bio undergrad program?

you should volunteer at a hospital before you decide. don't major in bio just because it's good for med school. you should do it because you like it.

Yes, 4321234's reply is a top notch answer.

Many aspiring med school students have this fantasy/prestitgious image of "being," or "becoming" a medical doctor. I am not sure as to what aspects dominate such ideas...but leaving that aside.

Being a doctor isn't just sitting next to patients all day and comforting them with your nice words, and psychological help (helping others). There are many ways to help others with immediate benefits.

Also... there are so many administrative issues to deal with, even at the hospital, where you're NOT running your own group practice or something.

Dealing with complaining, and difficult patients... etc... It's something you just have to have, and HAVE a high tolerance for naturally. Otherwise, 24/7 stress.

I am new to this whole college research thing as my oldest is a senior and will be going to a community college (due to lack of interest in anything about school) and my youngest is only a sophomore in high school. The youngest wants to be a Dr. According to what I have been reading medical schools are beginning to look for students with a more well rounded education. Meaning it is not necessary to become a biology major. As long as you take the required science courses before applying to med school you can major in anything you want. So the gist of it is that you should go to a school where you can major in something that interests you. While you are in college you can volunteer at a hospital or clinic. While you most likely won't come in contact with blood and guts, you will at least be in the vicinity! Good luck! Oh, and if you do decide that blood and guts are not your thing, once you make it through med school (you will have to deal with the b & g til your done) you can decide on pathology, radiology or other specialties that don't involve too much b & g!

don't just consider blood and guts. consider the money you might waste if med school really isn't your thing.
