Future Doctors Club

Hello everyone, I was thinking about starting a Future Doctors Club at my school. The problem is, I would really like to start a club like this but I really don't have any idea where to start. By this I mean, I don't know what I'd discuss at meeting, what kind of activities and trips I'd plan, etc. If you were a member of one at your school, could you tell me about what kind of activities your club participated in, what trips you went on (if any), what you talked about or what topics you held discussions on, if you any guest speakers, etc. Basically, how the club was run and what the meetings were like. Also, how responsive were the members to the topics that were being taught? I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me and please feel free to give any other information that you think is important, relevant, or helpful. Or if you were going to join one, what would you like to see/do? Thank you for your time.

P.S. I posted this on another forum but that forum is pretty inactive and some of the last posts there were months ago. Also, I know that clubs like this do exist in college so this is why I am asking it here. Once again, thank you.

The first thing you need to do is find a club adviser at your school, the school nurse/clinician is a good person to ask. Change future doctors club to health careers club to increase involvement and enrollment. We went to nursing homes to volunteer, had guest speakers, and that was about it.

And yes, hospitals may allows high schoolers to shadow during surgeries, one at a time more likely than all of them in a single OR.

Thank you so much for the response  And yea, I was thinking about changing the name from Future Doctors Club to something that includes as many careers involved in the medical sciences/medical field as possible.

If I were to join such a club next year, I’d just do it to get access to shadowing experiences more easily, so I think that should be an important part of the club. Guest speakers and speakers from the state medical schools would be nice too (if you go to a state university). Working in a soup kitchen with other students might be more fun that just doing it on my own too, so if such a club did that I would join (if my friends were in it too).

Just some suggestions.

Thank you. Is it possible to shadow as a high schooler though? And if so, where would you begin asking? Your general physician/family doctor? Pediatrician? Thanks again.

Yes, it is possible for high schoolers to shadow, though I hear it is getting harder. Hospitals are the first stop, call them up and see if they allow shadows/volunteers and what the requirements are.

Oh wait, I thought you were making this club for your university. I managed to shadow a couple of physicians during my summer before my senior year and during this year (senior year). It was more about using my connections than anything else.
