Future EECS transfer questions, URGENT

<p>I really hate doing these type of things last minute but my summer schedule got the best out of me and made me forgot about Fall registration! </p>

<p>Anyways, i'd like to keep things short and simple, and thank you for any input!
I am currently a CC student looking to transfer to Berkeley as an EECS admit. My dilemma/question is whether to transfer in 2 years (from starting CC) or 3 years? </p>

<p>I started community college last fall (fall 13), here is a list of all the classes i have taken:</p>

<p>Here is the assist for my school and berkeley:

<p>so what really stands is :
- UCB Math 53, 54<br>
- UCB Physics 7A, 7B </p>

<p>Now, for this incoming Fall 14, i am planning on taking :</p>

<p>MATH 24 4.00 (partly satisfies Math 54 from Berkeley)
MATH 4A 5.00 (satisfies Math 53 from Berkeley
PHYS 4A 4.00 (satisfies physics 7A from Berkeley)
CS 37 3.00 (not required, i don think it satisfies anything at Berkeley, and i might drop this to ease the load)</p>

<p>SEMESTER TOTAL: 16.00</p>

<p>and for this Spring 15:</p>

<p>CS 41 3.00 (partly satisfies Comp Sci 61B, i'd have to take a small class at Berkeley to finish)
MATH 26 4.00 (fully satisfies math 54 from Berkeley)
PHYS 4B 4.00 (satisfies physics 7B from Berkeley)</p>

<p>SEMESTER TOTAL: 11.00</p>

<p>so my main question is this, do you think this is a good schedule to follow or i should expand my Fall 14 and Spring 15 schedule? Initially i had been set on finishing in three years to ensure my good GPA, which currently for Fall 13 and spring 15 is 4.0, and summer classes look promising in keeping that GPA. However i fear taking physics along with two big math classes, and not sure whether its a good idea or not. I'm relatively good at math, however i have zero experience in physics. </p>

<p>I am not sure if its worth taking these classes together, or just go for a three year transfer. with a three year, i can complete more computer language classes, physics 7C and take more E.C. activities to ensure a better chance at admission. I have completed 4 of the general requirements GE they require with finishing my english classes and Psyc and HUM 70, along with the core classes. I'm just not sure anymore and could use some advice or guidance. </p>

<p>Will you apply to other schools, such as UCLA, UCSB, or UCSD?
Does CS 41 partly satisfy CS 61B? Assist does not indicate that.
Your Fall 2014 schedule is not too difficult. (In fact, I think your Summer 2014 schedule is more time-consuming than your Fall 2014 schedule; I would never take two classes in the summmer, let alone three classes.) You may just follow it. If it is too hard for you, drop one class before the drop deadline. I saw that at IVC, the drop deadline for refund eligibility is two weeks after semester starts.
Also, just a reminder, take Math 24 and Math 26 at the same college; don’t take Math 24 at IVC and Math 26 at a different college.</p>

<p>You probably want to take one of the following to cover CS 61B:</p>

<p>CS A200 and A250 at Orange Coast
CS G145 at Golden West
CSCI 133F at Fullerton</p>

<p>Santa Ana and Saddleback have partial CS 61B courses, but you must then take CS 47B after transfer.</p>

<p>None with 17 miles of Irvine Valley has any of CS 61A, CS 61C, CS 70, EE 20, or EE 40. However a discrete math course may cover some of the material in CS 70, and an electronics course may cover some of the material in EE 40, so it won’t be a total waste if you have to take such courses for other UCs/CSUs.</p>

<p>You also want to take two humanities and social studies (H/SS) courses (beyond the English R1A and R1B courses) in subjects which you may be interested enough in to take upper division courses after transfer, since Berkeley engineering requires six H/SS courses, including two upper division and two which make a sequence (at least one of which must be upper division).</p>

<p>If your emphasis will be CS, consider also the L&S CS major, since you will be able to fulfill all breadth requirements with IGETC in L&S. Admission may also be less difficult, but you would be admitted undeclared and have to take the remaining CS prerequisites and have a >=3.0 GPA across all CS prerequisites to declare the major. L&S CS requires one (not both) of EE 20 or EE 40 as a graduation requirement, although neither is required to declare the major.</p>

<p>@LaysOriginal‌ First off, thank you for your time! IVC is actually sister school with Saddleback, where CS41 is partially credited, and that is where i was planning in taking Data Structures. And currently, as stupid as it sounds i am mainly aiming for berkeley, but i will also apply to few others such as UCI and UCLA. Thanks for the advice and i might just post this there as well thank you!</p>

For CS 61B, Golden West is actually not offering it, i have searched for the course in their course schedule but could not find it, however Fullerton was an option i was looking at previously, but i later concluded with just staying and taking the Data Structures at saddleback for partial credit seemed a better idea since CS 47B is only a one unit class if i am correct. I will give it more thought to see whether if its worth it for the daily commute (about 20min without traffic), but it also looks like it needs a pre-req of c++, which hopefully they’d accept from IVC. </p>

I have taken Psyc 1, and History of Film, leaving only two more GEs to be filled at Berkeley. So from your quote, one of the 2 future classes i must take has to be related to one of these subjects: Psyc 1, or History of Film? And if so, would you happen to know if they have any sequences with these classes?</p>

<p>And lastly, as for L&S, i have gave it much much thought, but i have concluded in going for the higher degree EECS, since most of the EECS grads become software engineers anyways and mostly are employed at my favorite firm Google, so i’d figured my chances for employment there should be better with EECS and there looks to be more options or maybe higher chances for grad school after with EECS. </p>

<p>Anyhow, thoughts on whether i should do the 2 year or the 3 year? with the 3 year, i can definitely get more done, but i wont be getting classes done that is accepted for credit at Berkeley, but i wouldn’t mind the knowledge either and i know it can give me an edge regardless of credits. </p>

<p>any thoughts on CS37? should i keep it with physics, calc 3 and differentials? </p>

<p>After transfer, one of the upper division H/SS courses needs to be in psychology or the same department as history of film, or the two upper division H/SS courses need to be in the same department. Additionally, at least one must be an American cultures course. <p>EECS and L&S CS majors have similar opportunities in software jobs, although EECS majors have the option to do more EE.

<p>IVC’s catalog lists CS 36, 37, or 38 as a prerequisite for CS 41, so you want to take one of those courses if you do not have equivalent programming experiences. But you have already had CS 36 and 38, so adding CS 37 seems unnecessary (you should be able to pick up C++ fairly easily if you know C and Java).</p>

<p>Although not listed in ASSIST, IVC’s CS 6A and 6B appear to cover some topics in CS 70, and IVC’s 40A and 40B appear to cover some topics in CS 61C, so you may want to take one or more of those courses to get an
introduction to those concepts.</p>

<p>As far as two versus three years, it looks like you will be able to complete all of the available pre-transfer courses in two years (at least for Berkeley), so you may as well apply to Berkeley this fall. For other UCs and CSUs, you need to check ASSIST to see if you will be in a position to apply or if you need an extra year to complete the pre-transfer courses.</p>

<p>These were the extra classes i was planning on taking for the three year transfer, but i think i will go ahead with my current schedule and apply anyways, and worst case stay another year, do additional classes that will meet other UCs requirement and reapply. thanks for the help, now to decide whether to keep cs37 or not!! </p>

<p>On the two year plan, it may be more worthwhile to take IVC CS 6A or 40A instead of 37 in the fall, and the other one (or 6B or 40B) in the spring, assuming that they are offered, so that you can get a head start on the material in Berkeley CS 70 and/or 61C.</p>

<p>For some other schools, the IVC CS courses of use would be:
IVC CS 6A, 6B: CPP (6A only), CPSLO, UCLA, UCSB (6A only), UCSD
IVC CS 37: CPP, UCI, UCLA, UCSB, UCSC
IVC CS 40A, 40B: CPP, UCI, UCLA, UCSB, UCSD
IVC CS 41: CPP, CPSLO, UCI, UCLA, UCSB, UCSC, UCSD</p>

<p>Thanks @ucbalumnus‌ , i went ahead and dropped CS37 (c++) from my schedule, and ill be taking phys, Calc 3, and differentials! I figured to not risk it with too much load, and just focus on those subjects will be enough for me. Im going to apply this year, and if i dont get in im going to stay another year, take extra classes like discrete math, python, and do an internship over the summer as well and re-apply at berkeley along with other colleges. thanks again</p>
