You have a lot of good things going very well for you. My son was deferred ED to M&T and is hoping to hear really good news in 28 days.

To provide you a contrast to your respective backgrounds, I provide the following info on him:

He was 2nd team all-league golfer and a state championship qualifier. His golf team will also likely win the state championship in May.

In FBLA, He’s placed in State each year and been to Nationals as a sophomore. He anticipates qualifying for Nationals in Economics and in Banking Decision-Making [his banking team and he in Economics each took 3rd in state last year and missed making Nationals by less than 1 point]. He has similar things going on with Math. Mu Alpha Theta State trophies, AIME qualifier. He’s also been president of both the FBLA Chapter and the Math Club both Junior and Senior year.

AP Scholar, National Merit, Boys State, Rotary Scholar, twice decorated with a Community Service Award that is very highly regarded in our community…

He will finish with 8 APs and has "5"s on the three he had as a junior [including BC Calc]. He’s doing AP Physics and Chem simultaneously and holding his unweighted 4.0. He’s #1 out of 318.

He’s trying to find research internships this summer [after his senior year]. He pursued the summer experiences he loved [golf took a lot of time] and we likely should have explored research opportunities more. It seems just about everyone who’s posted recently that they got in to M&T-early has performed research and provided copy[s] of their abstract[s] with their application. I believe not having that on his application has been somewhat limiting.

I believe his 8 APs is the bare minimum and you’ve got to remember M&T is based out of SEAS [so having as many science APs with "5"s before you apply is likely is more helpful than Economics or languages].

He has a 2230 SAT score [single sitting] with 800 Math. I fear that being near or above 2300 is critical [we’ll see…]. Also try to get 800s on the Math 1 and Math 2 SAT IIs as well as Chemistry and Physics. Bio isn’t as much a driver here unless bio-engineering is your focus.

The other things that you’ve started that have flourished are amazing. I’m assuming when you mean “Indian”, it is East Indian and not Native American. If that is the case, I don’t believe your heritage will make a difference. East Indian’s are very well represented at all highly selective Universities.

Hey bluedevil, I was recently admitted to the M&T Class of 2015. Don’t worry too much now; I’m almost certain your college/major choice will change (in sophomore, I was so certain I wanted to go to Johns Hopkins and become a doctor!). But if you insist, I will share with you some of my stats and give my opinions on your stats:

-My test scores: 2250 SAT, 34 ACT, 800 Math II, 800 Chem, 770 Bio-E. As you said, in order to be a strong candidate for the program, you should get over 2200 on the SAT or 33 on ACT. Also try to get 800 on Math II. However, test scores aren’t everything.

-School work: I had taken a total of 9 AP classes (Calc AB, Calc BC, Stat, U.S., Gov’t, Bio, Chem, Physics C (M & E&M), Lit). I’ve gotten/ have A’s in all of them except for APUSH. Junior year got 5’s on all of the 4 AP tests I took. It’s impressive that you’re already starting to take AP classes as a sophomore; I’m sure your grades are very good.

-Extracurriculars: I am a FBLA Regional President, Local President, Student Council Treasurer, Science Olympiad Founder & President, Morning News Anchor. I went to FBLA Nationals last year for Business Calculation (good luck on your competitions this year!). I have also been a volunteer in the hospital (ER) for all 4 years of high school. Your extracurriculars seem very good. It’s good that you’re leaders in several clubs. However, rather than just being a leader, you should do something so during an interview you can brag about those accomplishments.

-Research: I myself conducted an independent environmental science related research project last summer (after 11th grade) with a professor at Penn. If you can, try to do some sort of research over the summer. This research project was the focus of my M&T essay.

Overall, I think you had a very good shot! However, because so few people get in, you can never be sure (I never really thought I would get in). Also, as I said in the beginning, it is still rather early to start the whole college application process…don’t be too focused now; explore other options. Best of luck!

Hey, i would like to do M&T as well, just wondering, do you have any ways for me to contact your summer research professor? Any advice on how to get one At PENN? I am doing summer research and need a mentor, any thing you can help me with?
