Future Pre-med student question

Due to poor time management on my part, I missed the deadline to apply for the honors program. Can I still be a very successful pre-med student and get into med school without doing honors college?

Would the honors program given a boost? Probably, but you’ll never know

Does it ultimately affect your chances of going to med-school? Not in the least bit.

Do well on the MCAT and in school and be involved in internships/research. At the end of the day, you’re in the boat of many other pre-med students, and many of them wind up becoming successful, you’re going to be fine

Med schools don’t give a flying **** what Uni you come from and if you did honors or not as long as you have a high enough GPA, MCAT, and the needed extracurriculars.

I honestly wouldn’t recommend honors, not because it’s extremely hard, it is tougher, but not unbelievably hard compared to a regular class (compared my friend’s tests from his honors class and they were similar to my regular class besides a few different parts), but because it doesn’t give a satisfactory benefit from doing the course since you don’t get extra grade points added for being in an honors class like you may have had in high school. They do curve, but then again the class averages for the tests in my friend’s class was a mid range 50, and they still had the plus minus system.

Is a student who has a 3.7 in all honors classes looked at more favorably than a student who has a 3.7 in all regular classes with the exact same extracurriculars? Yes, but I guarantee that the student who wasn’t in honors classes would still be able to get into a medical school (prestige means absolutely nothing when you get into a medical school unless you want to just do research your entire life) with much less late nights cramming for a test.

If you ask me, don’t do it, it will just add unneeded stress to the stress you would already have if you were in a regular class. Sure the profs might be better and the classes may be a bit smaller, but if you want to get into med school (I do as well) I would suggest trying to maximize your GPA as much as possible when you have the chance. If you are positive that you can handle the coursework, do it, if not, do regular classes for a semester, and see then if you want to transfer into an honors program like Dean Scholars.
