One from my Calculus professor at the Oklahoma School of Science and Math (best teacher I've ever had) who explained about how a humanities kid tackled a subject he didn't particularly like.

Appreciative letter from the Mayor who explained my political involvement in a local Union Battle with City Employees (extremely controversial).

Just be careful that you don't come off as abrasively confined to your own point of view. I love conservatives, and also did a good bit of campaign stuff, but Harvard is notoriously liberal. That doesn't necessarily mean that they will hate you, but they won't appreciate it at all if you bring out the political difference to much.

Does that make sense? Don't shorten yourself, by all means don't, but be careful that you don't come of as narrow minded.

The best conservative articles I have ever read are the one's that contrast different points of view. (As an example)

Present yourself right, and you'll be great!

I don't agree with this. You should never write your personal statement about a controversial political issue (no matter what position you hold), but if your main activity is deep involvement in conservative activism, then run with that.

Agreed. I don't think they'll hold it against you for being Conservative. They're less concerned with whether you're liberal/conservative, and more concerned with how dedicated you are.

PS, though most people here are liberal, the Harvard Republicans are an extremely vocal minority.

I absolutely agree with the statements written above. Of course anyone interested in politics has to be open minded, it's just part of the process. Speaking of liberal colleges, I'm sick of being the majority where I come from. I really want to get out and test the fires for my Conservative views. In my application I have made sure I don't come accross as close minded (especially in my essay, which talks about being a minority in a diverse body...much like Harvard).

But objectively speaking, what are my chances in getting into this great university? Above average, below average? I know it's hard to say since "Harvard lottery tickets" exist all over the country with so many talented people, but can anyone nudge me in a probable outcome?

That's the spirit! If that's your attitude you'll be great!!!

Did alot of work on the Bush campaigns this last fall - and I was getting pretty sick of people who close off anything but their point of view. They babbled off against Kerry and they didn't have the faintest idea what they were talkign about, and made us all look like idiots. You can't argue something you don't understand.

Very relieved to hear that!

Harvard has been kind of random lately...Trying to diversify their students, and all that good stuff, who know's...Any takers?

"Of course anyone interested in politics has to be open minded, it's just part of the process."

Unfortunately, not everyone is.

"Speaking of liberal colleges, I'm sick of being the majority where I come from. I really want to get out and test the fires for my Conservative views."

That's why I didn't go to Brown. I actually even asked for a conservative roommate here--didn't get one, but many conservatives are put in predominately liberal rooms, and vice versa. I know of one conservative guy who has 3 gay roommates. (Harvard has a sense of humor.)

"But objectively speaking, what are my chances in getting into this great university?"

I think you have strong chances. Best of luck.

I know of one conservative guy who has 3 gay roommates. (Harvard has a sense of humor.)

LOL are you serious??

It would be a little better if they were Jewish and black too.

This is interesting. No negative comments so far on my stats (not my opinions, just purely my chances of getting in). Usually people say I have around a 10ish percent chance of getting it on the boards.

"It would be a little better if they were Jewish and black too."

Hahahahahaha. Two of them are. (I don't know the third.)

This is a tad off-topic, but on the note of rooming, it's pretty known that Harvard has a sense of humor. For example, one freshman named Marie has a roommate named Antoinette. In my dorm, there's a room of girls whose names all begin and end with A (except one of them). There's a room of girls who all have the same name, Etc. I know an upperclassman who said that when he was a freshman, late in the year his entryway discovered that within the entryway, a group of students had all the names of the major characters from the Brady Bunch. So the fact that a conservative is put in a room of gay guys isn't really surprising.

GeorgeS: I think it's hard for any of us to say. You have a good chance, but most people have a "good" chance. Just make your app as good as you can make it, mail it off, and enjoy senior year.

That's probably because applicants in general (most of whom have strong credentials) have around a 10ish percent chance. In most years about 90% off the applicants to Harvard are rejected. Seems to me you have as resonable a chance as anybody, but who am I to know? There is nothing more useless than asking other kids or their parents what your chances are. The only ones who can really address that question are the Harvard adcoms, and that ain't us.
