I will be attending UCSD next fall and can't decide what I should major in. Can someone please give me the pros and cons of being and econ major vs. a communication major? My plan is to go to Business Grad school after UCSD(would they prefer to see a econ or communication major?) Basically, just help me decide!!

Business schools admit all majors. Your work experience trumps your chosen major.

Oyama basically sums it up. Your undergrad major definitely isn’t as important as you work experience/extracurriculars, GPA and GMAT score.

I was in your situation a couple of years ago, and I ended up going into my 1st year as an econ major. I wasn’t really interested in it in high school but I figured that I could just push myself through a couple years of it at SD. Welllll no. Unless you’re really into derivatives and the like or are naturally a numbers person, you’re going to have a tough time in the econ department (this is actually just based off of looking at my friends’ coursework, I bailed after 3 undergrad econ classes haha). It’s mostly because the econ department is so heavily math and theory based here.

So I ended up switching to comm this past year and it’s a much better fit!

If you’re talking about major just from a business school perspective, your major’s not a big deal. But if you’re looking to go into finance, a comm major’s not going to help you get an internships in that field.

But since you’re just a first year, you have plenty of time to decide what you want to major in. Take some courses in every dept, even the ones that you don’t need to graduate but seem interesting to you.

And you’re interested in business, look into the business minor here, it was just released last fall.

Good luck!

Thanks Oyama.

Christee, thank you so much! I know I have time to decide…however, I just want to get a good idea about things before I start school. This helped me greatly! I am already declared a communication major and most likely will not be switching to econ. It will be easier to balance school and rowing that way.
