Future UPenn M & T Applicant: Which Clubs Should I Join?

How does this sound?

SCHOOL NEWSPAPER
MEDICAL EXPLORERS CLUB
GLOBAL AWARENESS CLUB
MODEL CONGRESS
STOCK MARKET CLUB
YOUTH AGAINST CANCER
MATH CLUB
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

Of the following, I am currently actively participating in the first four, but am thinking about joining math club and science olympiad, while giving up model congress. Is this a good choice if applying for M & T? What other clubs should I join?

Thanks!

honestly it’s what u do w/ it that counts…

Pfff, joining a club for purely utilitarian purposes (and one as low as that for getting into a college) is as good as, if not worse than, not joining.

So what you’re saying is to join the clubs that interest me, right?

Well maybe I’m interested in the M & T program at UPenn, which I am. And based on this interest, I am wondering what I have to do in order to achieve the goal of being accepted there.

I understand that it is important to do what I love to do, and I plan on doing that, but sometimes you just need some guidance to make sure you’re going in the right direction.

After that response, I think I’ll be joining either Mock Trial or Model Congress.

And one last thing…

I will quote you on this, saying:

“Joining a club for purely utilitarian purposes (and one as low as that for getting into a college) is as good as, if not worse than, not joining.”

So, by simple subtraction, what you are really saying is that “joining a club for purely utilitarian purposes is as good as joining.”

My response to that would be: “Yes, it is indeed as good as joining, which is what I am doing.”

it’s not what club you join, it’s how much you do for the club you’re in and how active you are. you might want to stick with what interests you the most and do something somewhat significant.

For the M & T , joining clubs is not that significant, unless it shows leadership activities

Doing extracurriculars for the purpose of getting into colleges is something that every admissions officer has seen before and knows how to spot. To think that you can join a few clubs and let that be your silver bullet for admissions to the M&T program is to think that buying a second baseball bat will make you a major leaguer.

M&T is extremely tough to get into, regardless of who you are or what you do. If you’re going to be a senior, why on earth would you drop an activity to join one that’s more M&T-ish? That’s just ridiculous. They don’t look for people with business experience to get into that program; they look for leaders and high achievers. Example: Buddy of mine just graduated from M&T. In HS he was heavily involved in chorus and band, was the lead in all of the musicals and was vice president of the band. He also had terrific grades and took difficult classes, but he did NOT decide to join clubs for the purpose of padding a resume.

If you want to do a club, join it. If you want to join a club to get into college, for your sake and the club’s sake, do NOT!

I’m not a senior. I’m going to be a soph next year. Sorry for the confusion

^. Dude… I know I sound like an ******…
But *? It’s when people like you get spots when people who deserve them get rejected that es me off.
Youre taking 3 years of your life… And modeling them to give you what MIGHT give you an acceptance letter…
So basically fabricating lies…
This is ing bulls
…

Yea I got my ass kicked in basketball this morning so I’m being a jerk. But seriously. Take our advice and do stuff you love. Life’s not about impressing colleges. And your subtraction theory…wth?.. It’s grammar.
