Fye

I think I may have actually read everything on the Case website in the past few weeks. One of my main concerns is with this whole First year experience program. They have the four residential colleges that are for freshmen. Do the freshmen get to choose which residential college (dorm) they want to live in? It seems as though they are based on major... or at least it said one was community service, one theatre, and I forgot the other two.

Have any of the EA students applied for housing yet? If so...could you further explain the process involved?

The dorms don't look that amazing...and I'm really hoping for a single.

I am a frosh this year
and the FYE thing really isn't a big deal

You can select a preference, though it really doesn't matter.
Next year they are changing back to 3 residential colleges (the way is was in fall 2005), With only Cedar, Juniper and Mistletoe;Magnolia is being absorbed by Cedar and Mistletoe. That being said, the themes of each college aren't really a big deal. Its appears to be a poor attempt to try and mimic the Residential Colleges at Harvard or Yale or Cambridge or Hogwarts... Where they actually mean something, and its not just freshmen, and each college has its own buildings and dining hall etc.

You can get into any of the buildings in your RC from 10am-12pm, and you can't get into buildings not in your college.

Its not major based at all, nor is really a big deal about "service, theatre etc."
Basically it controls the programs that are put on by your RAs etc.

Also, another big difference is room style.
Juniper and Cedar have all "hall style" where there is one big floor of rooms on the outside, and the one bathroom in the middle of each floor. one gender per floor

Mistletoe has all "QUAD" style, where there four rooms in corner of each floor and then two bathrooms per floor, one male one female, connecting two of the groups of rooms.

Relax about the whole thing about residential colleges
It really doesnt matter. And if you don't pick, its all random anyway.

Hope that helps

thank you :)

It was mostly the dorm style I was concerned about, and thanks for the info. I'm glad its not a big deal then.

You say you can only get into your dorm from 10am to 12pm?
Does that mean you can't get in after 12pm? Is that a curfew?

no you can get in your building at any time
its just that you can't get into a different REs. College buildings ever
and only get into your fellow res. college buildings from 10am to 12am

i.e.
I live in Sherman this year
I can get into Raymond and Norton from 10am-12am with my ID card.

I can't ever get into Pierce, Tyler, Taft, Storrs, Hitchcock, Smith.

No its not really a curfew, and its kind of stupid anyway, I don't see a reason we shouldn't be able to get into any case frosh dorm anyway... Oh well

I am currently in the Cedar residential college. I don't think it really matters which theme you choose, but I would suggest requesting a college with quad-style dorms--of course, I am somewhat biased because I have an amazing set of hall-mates. We're all really close (everyone goes to everyone else's performances and events, we eat dinner together almost every day). I feel that quads really foster a close-knit community.
By the way, I haven't talked to anyone who requested one residential college and got another.
Oh, and the rooms are pretty small, but if you're OK with lofting your bed you'll be alright and we get tons of storage--cabinets and drawers. (The room size is another reason I suggest the quads, it feels more like a suite, you actually have a large space to hang out). --But you should come visit to see for yourself.
