GA Resident Applying - Unsure about ED [3.79UW (please ignore typo in the post), 4.12W, 1420, 32]

How can your unweighted GPA be so close to a perfect 4.0 when you had at least four B grades?

I wondered that as well, my daughters had a slightly lower gpa with one B.

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

UGA not likely - and yes, you need to add some schools.

Get Auburn in early
I think they have a Sept 15 deadline upcoming if you can make it.

UGA considers a weighted GPA with core classes. The average UGA GPA was a 4.02 last year and mine is a 4.16 if you calculate it according to the admissions website. Still not likely?

UGA 4 at 25th percent and 4.3 at 75th.

Where are you seeing the average.

I’m not an AO. My opinion doesn’t matter. Apply and see. Good luck

As I said you’re a great student !! And you’ll have many choices, possibly including UGA.

Not sure where it is now but I quickly looked it up and that was the first thing that came up. Could be wrong. Thanks for the help

For those not familiar with UGA Admissions, they recalculate all GPAs. The Admissions blog covers this extensively so the calculation can be found there.

Here is the published 2027 class profile (not CDS). UGA welcomes Class of 2027

“The rigor of students’ high school coursework relative to what is available at their school remains a key factor in admissions decisions at UGA. The first-year students arrive with an average of 10 Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or dual-enrollment courses. The class has an average high school GPA of 4.13. This marks the seventh consecutive year that the average weighted high school GPA of the entering students exceeds 4.0. The class of 2027 also posts an average ACT score of 30 and an average SAT score of 1339. The class includes 215 incoming Georgia valedictorians and salutatorians.”

OP, I think you have a good chance at UGA, but not a shoo-in. I would not be surprised if you are deferred EA then accepted RD. UGA’s EA round has become a tough admit for kids with very good, but not perfect GPAs. UGA places the greatest weight on GPAs and rigor.

Best of luck to you!!

This is my advice also. I think that you need to be pretty sure what your top choice is before you ED anywhere. It is not necessary to ED anywhere.

Also, since you are likely to be pre-law, you should budget for both degrees (which I think is 7 years if I am remembering this correctly). It would be best, if you can manage it, to graduate with your law degree and no debt. Otherwise, try to keep the debt as low as is reasonably possible.

You can major in anything and then go to law school. I happen to know some lawyers whose work is high tech related. As far as I know they all have bachelor’s degrees that are in engineering or computer science. However, that is why they are practicing law in engineering or computer science related areas. There are many types of lawyers, and you can major in anything and also go to law school.

Which suggests that your ECs are fine. Also, your ECs do not need to have anything to do with your major.

One daughter was rejected from Colorado College with stats that were only marginally better than yours. I am not sure if it is a match or a low reach. I similarly am not sure whether U. Washington and UIUC are matches or low reaches.

Best wishes. I think that you have a good list of schools and will get some good acceptances.

You might want to correct your typo in your OP so anyone reading from the start has the accurate info. JMO.
I agree that you will likely get deferred from UGA initially, but unlikely you will get an outright denial initially.

OP may no longer have the ability to edit since they’re a new user so I updated the thread title instead.

I do not know current detailes about GA(used to live there long time ago), but if I understand correctly

  1. Due to GA laws to accept to GA public colleges, a high percentage of GA residents, academic requirements and GPA are lower for Georgia residents.
  2. I believe with your GPA you are eligible for Hope or Zell, that provide free tuition in GA.
In the light of 1 and 2, I believe you can make UGA and it is your best option. In case of no direct admission to UGA, I have no doubts that you will be accepted to GSU. I have no idea what is the best way to transfer to UGA (Kenesaw, GSU or one of the Community Colleges), but that route is the most attractive in my opinion due to the low cost and current caliber of UGA.

True, my daughter’s voice coach’s son majored in marching band in undergrad, he just got his law degree.

Due to changes made by the legislature, currently there is very little difference between the HOPE and the Zell Miller. That could change if the legislature reverts it back to the old system or, I think, if tuition goes up, the hope only covers full tuition based on the previous year’s tuition. It certainly makes UGA attractive if you are considering a large university. Quite a different experience than Davidson, for example, would provide.

UGA middle 50 GPA was 4.2-4.2 .

4.2 - 4.4 I mean

When my daughter first came up with her list, we were not aware that many of the schools had capacity-constrained majors. So although it looked as if there were lots of choices for majors, the reality was that current students had to compete to get into those majors after their second year after maintaining a minimum GPA. For the most popular majors, only a minority of applicants are accepted.

University of Washington is one of those schools. So if you go in undecided and later want to get into a popular major, it may be more difficult than you think. Some majors will directly admit a certain percentage of first-years upon admission to UW, which is great if you are certain of your path, but not necessarily if you change your mind.

I do not know about the other schools on your list, but you may want to check. If my daughter were to do it again, I think she’d replace a few of the schools on her list that had capacity-limited majors with schools that allowed you to declare and change majors more freely.

For some perspective, went through last years cycle with similar gpa and same act. Rejected at Clemson, waitlisted at UGA (didn’t stay on, already committed to first choice school). I’d move Clemson to reach. For similar to to UGA schools I’d look at UofSC and VT (although they tend to not give much $)and move Auburn to match (get application in as soon as possible). You are reach heavy, make sure you have a safety you love and can afford! You would get an auto scholarship to Auburn with your stats and most likely one at UofSC too. I might have missed it but where are you from in a Georgia? If rural that helps with UGA. Good luck!
