Ga Tech...

Hey  I’m from India and my SAT score is pretty bad. I have a 1990(CR:590 M:780 W:620). I also have an IELTS band score of 7.5. My SAT subject score is 2380 (M II:790 P:790 C:800 ). Well my question is, will my SAT subject score sort of showcase them that I am somewhat proficient in the subjects that I wish to study, or will it be of no use because my SAT 1 score is low. Btw, I wish to pursue Mech. Engg with a minor in CS. I don’t mind anyone being blunt, and yeah I’m not asking you to chance me, I just want an opinion on how much importance is given to SAT Subject scores.

Engineering departments within selective schools often place a lot of emphasis on math and science subject test scores, since they are decent indicators of how well you’ve mastered the necessary curriculum expected of engineerings students. Especially for math, physics, and chem, your scores are gr8. They probs will compensate for your rather low SAT score, at least for ga tech. For more selective schools, your sat score, even with your high SAT ll’s, may not be enough.

@alexphan202020‌ thanks a lot  . Though me getting is sort of impossible as many Indians have better SAT 1 scores and equally impressive SAT 2 score

As harder as it is applying as an international, as long as you’re a qualified applicant, you will have a decent chance. If you’re GPA is solid, you have a pretty good shot.

Ah!!.. That’s when shit crashes down the roof. I was in the top 20 percentile in 11th and now I’m in the top 15 percentile. So not a very good shot I guess. Anyway thanks for your comments

Your essay and recommendations will matter a lot. Your SAT score is definitely good enough. I’m a bit concerned about your class rank, top 15% might not be good enough… I’ve advised some people and helped them get into their dream colleges before, what other schools are you applying to? Let me know if you need some help

@parentmike‌ I’m in the top 15% because, there are actually three streams in my education system: science, commerce and humanities. We, science guys need to go to classes for about 4-5 hours to prepare for our engineering entrance exams so, we do not get enough time to study our school syllabus, as a consequence our grades suffer a drop. I’m not giving excuses, I could have done better. My high school is ranked among the top 10 in India, so yeah it’s a bit competitive :stuck_out_tongue: .And about other colleges, I’ve been accepted by Penn State and Purdue. Rejected by UIUC and UT-Austin. Still waiting to hear from Michigan, GA Tech, UCLA, UCB, Cornell and yeah MIT (LOL).

It is critical that you explain the differences in curriculum and it would be ideal if you find how well you rank among the science students. That can be a deal breaker for a lot of colleges. I had a 3.1 GPA and 1850 on my SAT and made it into Duke.

@parentmike‌ I tired to explain the differences wherever possible, but I didn’t want to come across as the guy who just made excuses for his poor grades, thus I didn’t go in depth.

@parentmike what year did you get into Duke with those stats? I think you are dreaming and living in the past. Duke wouldn’t give you a second look today with those numbers unless you were a highly recruited athlete.
