Howdy, future Hoyas!

I myself just got home from what I thought was a relatively helpful weekend.

Just wondering what you all thought of the GAAP weekend, for those of you that attended.

Thoughts, Comments, did the visit sway you at all, are you officially decided?

Thanks!

I was there on friday (couldn't make it on saturday, but I don't think I missed much). I thought the whole thing was pretty nice, and, if money were no object, would have swayed me to send my deposit check to Georgetown. Unfortunately, I'm still unsure of my plans, as Georgetown is significantly more expensive per year than my state school, UVa.

i thought the classes that were available to sit in on were pretty poor. the ones i visited were dull and had uninspiring professors, and i know for sure that gtown has better and more interesting academics than that.

the convocation on friday in healy with all the different speakers was pretty good. that guy Professor Arendt? Wow.

the student panels were pretty good, but the icebreaker activities were a little stupid. and by the way, how come this wasn't an overnight stay program? that would have given far more insight into life at the school.

I had an awesome time, and met really amazing people. I was really ****ed that they didnt have a Spanish class (my major) for me to go sit in on. As tacky as the icebreakers were, I liked them. I also really liked the student panels, and the dean's lunch.

I decided that I'm definitely going!

well, thats true that it wasnt an overnight stay program, if you had a friend at georgetown (in which case a good number of GAAP kids did) you could have just as easily gotten the feel of an overnight stay program... for example, i have a freshman friend in the COL and he showed me what his typical friday nights were like... which was pretty cool. D.C. is pretty "happenin!"
academics wise, i agree with you cavalier... if it werent for the financial aspect, i'd send my deposit in a flash.
the classes ill also agree weren't too hot, but i'm trying not to judge the entire academic perspective of the university based on one or two not-so-impressive classes I witnessed.
Otherwise, people and atmosphere are great!
I hope that when I go to Penn for PennPreviews (almost the GAAP equivalent) that it will be equally as insightful.

awesome, jangel86! perhaps i'll see you in the fall!

GAAP does offer overnight programs during GAAP weekends, however they are not explicitly advertised as part of the GAAP weekend programs. It simply would be impossible to keep track of 300+ students staying on campus, security, etc. So, if you want to stay on campus(those going to the upcoming weekends) call the admisisons office and ask if you could have an overnight stay with GAAP. They should be able to place you with someone. Also, like someone said before, if you know someone, you can always stay with them.

What professors did you get? I'm sorry you had a bad experience, in my personal experience ALL of my professors have been so awsome and so engaging, I have yet to hate a class because of the professor. Tell me who they are and what subjects so that I can go kick their butts for having given you such a bad experiebce, I really am sorry!

I attended and it was amazing. I agree, if finances were better for me, I would have given them the deposit during that weekend. My mom went to the financial aid office and was able to get an extra 1k grant though, so it wasn't a wasted weekend in that sense. My class was kind of weird because I sat in an Arabic class and had no idea what they were talking about. Yeah, the icebreakers were pretty lame but everything else was really good. The lecture was really interesting and the historic tour was fun.

oh come on! everyone is saying that the icebreakers were lame, but that's the point! we are all dorks, and its the dorkiness in all of us that makes us awesome and unique. the whole point of icebreakers is lameness, so that you can just let go and laugh. so i liked em!

What were the icebreakers?

Icebreakers were where groups of 6 or 7 prospective students sat around with one or two current students just to talk with each other about themselves. I thought it was fairly interesting - the people in my group were from all around the country and had all kinds of differences. We were all surprisingly similar in a lot of ways, so it was pretty cool.

so no like running around playing dumb games or something? because when I hear icebreakers, I think of games. I don't mind talking in little groups though.

In my group, each person got a handful of M&M's, and, for each color, we had to talk about something different, such as our favorite disney movie or our hometown. There was no running around.

oh and I meant to ask (I know this is such a girl question...), was everyone like in skirts and everything?

Did anyone go by themselves? My family can't afford the plane ticket for both me and my mom so I'm just going to the weekend by myself. I'm going to be coming in for April 22-23 Exactly how dangerous is DC at night? Also, i'm flying into BWI, how do I get to G-town from there? I obviously can't rent a car, not twenty-one :(. My parents are freaking out cuz I'm the first one in the whole family to go to college. Also, I'm staying an extra sunday because I just wanted to check out DC, for anybody out there who would know, do you know where i can attend a Catholic mass on Sunday? What time? Thanks!

OK, so... you need to take the train (aprox. cost: 14 dollars) from BWI to Union Station, from there you are in Downtown DC, so, youc an take the metro anywhere or you cantake a cab (which I recommend) for about 10 dollars you should be able to gat anywhere. On that extra sunday, what better place to go to mass at Gtown! At Dahlgren! :) If that doesn't work, there are plenty around town. DC is pretty safe at night, just don't walk anywhere, amke sure you are always alert, and that's why I recommend you take a cab from Union Station. Exactly where are you staying, and that might help, if you don't want to disclose that info, then I can guarantee that from Union Station to Gtown area it's about 9.60. Plan ahead of time, and if you don't feel comfortable putting your details online, I'll give you my e-mail,a nd we'll plan out a schedule. (I'm a current student BTW)

haha txstudent.. what do you mean by that? do you mean to ask if its a formal type event or a casual deal?
If that's the question, dont worry about dressing nice; mostly everyone was in jeans or shorts and tennis shoes.
Although, if I may comment, when I was there I couldn't help but notice the attractive factor of the female student body. There are so many beautiful people there, from a wide range of ethnicities. Very nice, indeed!
