My niece was accepted to Brandeis but only to the Spring 2010 semester. Since was was accepted and not waitlisted she basically has no chance to enter this fall with other regular decision students. Brandeis is her dream school but she is terribly upset that other less qualified students that were waitlisted have at least a chance to start classes during the normal fall semester instead of having to sit around until January 2010. My advice to her is to wait until the “Summer Melt” period occurs when students must submit their tuition payment and contact the school inquiring if any space opens up because some accepted student, for whatever reason, has decided to attend another college and give up their deposit monies. Any other suggestions???

If you are accepted as a Midyear, you are considered an accepted student. Brandeis doesn’t let midyear students go on the waitlist for fall semester, and if a spot opens up, it will go to a person already on the waitlist. You can always try persuading them, but this happens every year and I’m pretty sure the admissions office has never let midyears take a vacant spot in the fall.

I know it sucks now, but once the midyears arrive in January, they form really close bonds with each other because they’re all in the same position, and after the first semester, they are basically integrated into the class anyway that people don’t care or ask if they were a midyear or not.

My advice would be for her to maybe contact other midyears in the Facebook group and get to know them, just so she knows other people are going through the same thing too. Also have her do something fun and worthwhile with her semester off.

WaitingDad, if you haven’t seen it, here’s a very good recent discussion about Brandeis mid-years: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brandeis-university/669767-mid-year-acceptance.html?highlight=brandeis+midyear

I understand that she’s upset, but she should take more of a “glass-half-full” point of view and realized that she was accepted after all. She could have been rejected, like thousands of qualified applicants.

I think she’s also very mistaken if she thinks that she’s more qualified than someone who was accepted off the waitlist for the fall semester. If she was “more qualified” then she would have been admitted for the fall.

I think she should be happy that she was admitted and if Brandeis truly is her “dream school” than waiting a few months is hardly a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

FYI: 30 years ago, Brandeis was my dream school. I applied ED, was deferred and then got in under the regular admissions cycle. Spring admissions was not available back then, but if it was and the choice came down to spring admissions at Brandeis or going elsewhere, I would have jumped at the chance to go to Brandeis.
