I'm interested in specializing in fashion @ gallatin.(if anyone has done fashion or something like it at gallatin, any info you have would be great) How hard is the school to get into? I'm applying reg. decision and I got a 1910 on SATS and a possible track recruit along with other awards and ec;s.... do I have hope?

gpa? sat two scores? courseload?

gpa 99.17 (weighted) i don't no they unweighted.
sat twos lit 600, math level 1 650
4 AP's this year, all honors throughout high school

you def. have a chance, your test scores are a little low though gallatin has a reputation for being less numbers driven and more essay driven - so write a good essay. admissions can really be a crapshoot.

but before you even apply, are you sure that you can do fashion at nyu? strangely enough, nyu has no fashion department meaning that most, if not all, of the courses you will take will be taken through a non-fashion department and those courses may only loosely relate to fashion. during my gallatin panel last year, one of the advisors talked of their advisee having to transfer to another school because she didn't realize the lack of fashion options at nyu. I highly reccommend taking a look at nyu course offerings to see if they have the courses you want before applying.

if you want to concentrate in the actual business or marketing aspect of fashion, that may be far more feasible to do at gallatin and nyu in general. you could also take some studio art classes. most of your courses still may not have the word "fashion" in them, but you could probably apply them to the fashion world. But if youre wanting to take design classes and such, you should really be applying to FIT or parsons.

i'm hoping to do like "the history and culture of fashion." i think you're allowed to take some classes at FIT and i guess alot of internships? but i'm not sure. i want to go into fashion merchandising, while attending a college in the city, not a design school. so it's a toss up, go to a school in the city and create your own major, or go to a college that actually has your major. thanks so much for the advice!

it seems like you are trying to recreate the wheel...perhaps you should enroll in a true fashion merchandising program to gain some real hands on merchandising skills...like product development, forecasting, etc? Lots of programs to consider.

As far as wanting to go to school in NYC, consider this: If you decide to choose fashion merchandising as a career, most likely you will be living/working in NYC once you graduate. Even if you go to school elsewhere, in four years you will be back in NYC to work.

Lastly: check out schools that have a 3/1 program with FIT. That may appeal to you, also.
