Gallatin Transfer Ignored at Transfer Board

Hopefully you guys will be more helpful.
The dream is Gallatin. I want to be able to make my own double major, something along the lines of music & communications with an emphasis in music performance and graphic design.

I am an opera singer and have been classically trained for 9 years. I am also an entertainment manager, mostly for songwriters. I have a desire to perform and I am starting a music publishing label.

A VP at a major record label that I worked for during the spring 2004 semester actually suggested that I apply to Gallatin. If it sounds far-fetched, don't worry. He's writing me a recommendation letter.

My essay is about my internship experience; it was there that I learned an education in both curriculums would be a great aid for my future goals.

I'm ignoring the stats for now. I'm asking you guys if Gallatin is right for me. I truly feel that it is, but I'm not 100% until other people offer their opinions.

Based on that you shouldn't have a problem unless your stats are low.. post up your stats for a better idea..

3.7 Honors Liberal Arts Program at a CC.
PTK, Honors Club, Opera Club VP, Music Chair of Campus Activities Board, 2 performance ensembles.

HS stats are low - 3.2 GPA, 1040 SAT 1, 680 writing, 650 lit, 620 us history.

thank you so much. I really feel insecure with the whole HS thing and I'm not sure if I need a confidence boost or a reality check.

I'd say your ECs will get you in.. your SATs are too low and NYU looks at HS stats.. but what school wouldn't want someone of your credentials with the potential to contribute huge to the university.. make sure you emphasis that in your essay.. gl

So, just to play safe, would it be a good move to retake the SAT 1's? Barnard told me to. Then I got bored with that school and decided not to stress. But I'm up for stress if it makes me look better on paper.

I've read that they only consider high school SAT scores. You might want to check on that. But, if that's not true, you should definitely retake SATs.

u could probbaly get into there performing arts school, and then get another major in a different school for communications, and minor in graphic design

i think ud have a way higher chance at tisch ( thats the one for singers right?) than gallatin, and then just taking courses at another college. You may have to stay in for a little more than 4 years to do that tho

You may want to check which classes are available at your level of voice performance as a Gallatin measure. I have heard that there are restrictions on the courses you can take from the various colleges. It many be better for you to go through Steinhardt or Tisch--I don't know which one would fit you better, again at the level of voice/music that you want. You can double major at Tisch, I know.

Jamimom is correct that you should check on the restrictions for non-majors. If you want to major in vocal performance, that would be in Steinhardt which is NYU's school of music. Tisch does not have a voice major. Tisch does not allow non-Tisch students to take the same classes its majors do. There is an open arts curriculum for non-majors but it certainly is very limited compared to what is available to majors. I'm not sure if Steinhardt is the same. It's quite possible. You would have to audition for Steinhardt. Also, I think the only graphic design offered at NYU is through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. It's a certificate program and is probably not what you're looking for. NYU does not recommend that students who are already in college retake the SAT's. They will require a h/s transcript and your SAT scores but the longer you've been out of h/s, the less important they'll be in the admissions decision. My suggestion is for you to call the Admissions office and request to speak to a member of the Gallatin committee. The number is (212)998-4500. Good luck to you!

Well, I thought Gallatin was the only school that would allow cross registration but if that's not the case, I will certainly look into other schools for performance. I'm an opera singer, so I would apply to Steinhardt. Does anyone know if Steinhardt allows students to take courses at other NYU schools?

I'm pretty sure every NYU school does. For your electives, you can pick any class. Also, you can minor in something from one of the other schools. (I know this is true for Stern, at least)
