Game Design

Is there a way to take classes from the ETC undergrad, or any game design courses at CMU? Does anyone know? I can't seem to find any information on this.

The ETC is mainly for grad students in the program and presumably you would need the instructor’s permission. It’s a very interactive program and students work mostly in teams so it would be hard to take just one course here and there. There are a few courses in SCS that are related to game design such as “Animation Art and Technology” but they’re really about computer science, not games per se. There are student-taught classes also like “3D Studio Max; Intro to Character Animation”.

Here’s the link to the course catalog: https://acis.as.cmu.edu/gale2/open/Schedule/SOCServlet?Formname=ByDept

There’s also a very active Game Creation Society that’s heavily involved in game design; students in the GCS are the ones getting hired by the game companies, incidentally:

My old roommate (an ECE) built a working joystick and computer game it interacted with for a project in one of his classes. I think he went to a few of the GCS meetings, but didn’t stick with it because he said they were way more into it than he was.

He actually did get a job offer from a pretty good video game development company (not going to say which one, but they had three greatest hits games on the PS2 of the three games they released), but he turned it down in favor of a more traditional computer engineering job.

Yeah, a lot of folks seem to do that. My dream is to get into the video game industry and, being a girl, try and get some popular games out there that women can enjoy. That’s what really attracted me to CMU - their commitment to game design as a serious career!

Kate, you might look at RPI too, if you haven’t already.

RPI is one of my definite fallback schools. Most of my family went there, albeit not for game design. It’s a neat school! :)

Here’s another place you could consider; they’ve really been enlarging their game design curriculum.

[DePaul CDM – College of Computing and Digital Media – formerly the School of Computer Science, Telecommuincations and Information Systems](http://www.cdm.depaul.edu/Pages/default2.aspx)

Other good possibilities to consider include

1) USC, which has a major in Computer Science - Games
2) Cornell, which has a minor in game design.
3) UC Santa Cruz also has a Game Design major

Yep, WAMOM2, those are my top choices. As it stands now–

Cornell (Applied Early Decision)

Carnegie Mellon

USC

and UC Santa Cruz is my fallback, since I’m an in-state resident and it’s very close nearby. RPI is also one of my fallbacks, as was mentioned above. :)
