game dev A.S. or computer science

Hello everyone, I am a new member to this site. I've always came here and read very interesting post and decided to become a member. I have a strong passion with games, I watch people on youtube program games, basic games even and just amazes me. I want to do that. I am not one of those people that like games and think since I like them I should make them. I am currently in the military and have about a year left, I will be using my G.I. Bill to attend college so the cost is covered. My thing is, I live in kansas and there aren't any game studios here if one wanted to work in the industry here their chances are slim to none. There is a college that stood out to me Johnson County Community College, you can type jccc in google and it will come up. Anyhow, they offer a game dev. course which is two years, have a few programming classes in the program. From what I see nothing too bad. I contacted the staff about job placement and interns and pretty much told me there are low chances of finding work in kansas in game dev because of the lack on studios and most students start their own business or move to pursue a B.S. in game dev. That kinda bothers me, I have no problem with having to start my own business with game dev but how much do these 2 year game course teach? Do they prepare grads with the knowledge to program complete games alone? I've heard small teams taking a long time pushing games out, yet alone being a longwolf about it. Have anyone went to a community college in a game dev course and succeeded with their dreams of developing games? My other option is trying to get through with a degree in computer science. This path scares the crap out of me because I'm not strong in math because early life I skated by with just enough to get by. C student maybe D in highschool, I've taken remedial math classes and been doing pretty good, B grades so far but I havent even tackled college algebra yet. Sorry if this is kinda long for most of you guys taste, what would you guys advise to do? I would love to get everyone's opinions, and if you have attended a game dev course plz leave feedback. My passion is to make games but I know I need to be financially stable to live first, so would I be setting up for failure chasing this game dev degree and land no job, no money from self made games? Should I take my chances at computer science even though I suck at math at the moment ( but try to get better) and land some type of job and learn game programming on the side? Thanks to all that read :)

Try to speak with some students that attend the program at Johnson Community College or attend an open house and speak to an advisor or professors there for more information. Game design/development is a growing industry and more colleges are starting to offer this major. It would be beneficial to take classes in computer science too. If you start in a 2 year program at community college you can see if this field is really what you want to do. You can then transfer to get a 4 year degree.

My son is a sophomore in HS and is very interested in game design/ development/ graphics/ web design. He is not so sure if he wants to major in computer science, but may minor in it. He is a pretty decent math student. We are looking at 4 year colleges, including some technology schools that offer this major in the Northeast.

I think you would definitely need a strong math background to study computer science. Follow your dreams. You will never know unless you try. Good Luck!
