Gaming and College (How much time should I spend studying?)

yo, I'm not going to beat around the bush on this one: I'm addicted to video games. For a week now, I've been on World of Warcraft for 12 hours (at the very least) everyday, and I just did 15 hours tuesday. Now that I have more free time as a senior enjoying his early vacation, I can't say I miss high school life.

College, however, is a totally different thing. I'll be attending the University of Michigan this fall for Computer Science, and would like to keep a good GPA with some gaming on the side. Is this possible? I thought about devoting 2-3 or maybe 4 hours everyday on my studies and spend the rest of the time playing WoW or going outside.

Does anyone have any good advice (or have some stories to tell)?

Thanks in advance! (Fenriz on the Dethecus US server, for all the WoW players).

WOW will take a significant chunk of your time. The amount of time for studying really depends on you. 3-4 hours/day may or may not be enough depending on your workload at a particular semester.

In my college senior year, I used to spend my weekends raiding and weekdays farming herb/ BG-ing. Of course this was years ago when the raiding dungeons were only Ony, MC, ZG and BWL. I've stopped playing since they introduced AQ so I don't know how hardcore most people are. Also you might want to discuss your study schedule to your guildies.

Oh man, I wouldn't want to be addicted to WoW during college.

dood, seriously, stop playing on your computer ruining your eyes, go outside, play some sports meet some girls and make friends, it'll serve you better and you'll have a nice tan.
get addicted to something better like women or pot or cigarrettes,...at least they'll make you seem cooler.

well you certainly wont be able to game 12-15 hours a day sometimes. It really deends on your workload. For instance in college you can have 3 weeks of nothing to do outside class, then 5 tests in one week. You probably could play 12-15 hours for the first week, then not at all for that one week, and still have a good GPA.

Gaming is good for your brain, and as a comp sci major, it might help.

I don't play computer games anymore, but when I was a kid, I'd play Mario from morning till evening, everyday, with my bro, but that was only during holiday time, after we'd worked our hearts out during term time.

Now, I play chess for fun.

I agree with punkdudeus.

You should stop playing warcraft and enjoy your summer. Spend the time with friends, whom you might not see in awhile, date hot girls, or just do something productive like a job. This is your last summer before college (party time :p). Plus its better to quit now then try to quit during college.

Spend less time playing videogames, seriously. Especially when college starts!

Anyway, during the school year last year, I'd spend maybe 3 or 4 hours a week playing games (computer and console)... that was mostly playing SSBM with friends. Occasionally I'd play Battlefield 2142 on the computer, but not as much.

In my instance during the school year I spend about 13 hours a day studying, plus classes then sleep. I do this 7 days a week except Friday nights, is when Il take a brake and watch a movie. On the weekends I catch up on a little more sleep. I used to play counter strike, but dont have much time anymore. The best part for me is there is nothing I would ever rather do than study for school. so it works out nice.

My roomate last semester, a Doctor to be, played world of war craft all of the day except for maybe 3-4 hours a day. He never went to classes, never bought the books and well never studied. He is in the Honors program and has maintained a 4.0 gpa and does almost nothing. Even while all of his friends in the same exact classes struggle there asses off.

he is just that good.

Yeah, during the school year, I had very little free time, but I used what I had to play chess. Could never get enough of school work.

WoW destroyed my high school years. Abandon it now; don't look back.

Play as much as you can over the summer...maybe you will get bored of it. If you are addicted to WoW in college it is not a good thing. Unless you got good self control and can do your work first you will have some very crappy grades. Even if you have good self control your social life will probably stink. Best to get over it. RPGs are like blackholes when it comes to time spent.

I was in a serious raiding guild during my senior year, and it was not a good idea for me. During the summer whenever I wasn't working and my friends weren't available to hang out with, I played WoW to the point where I just got sick of it.

I quit WoW from the start of my freshman year of college until the expansion pack came out because I figured the game will get better for me. I leveled up my toon to 70, tried a couple of raids, and tried to PvP. I then realized I hated WoW now more than ever and I cancelled my account since then. Being a priest sucks lol.

Playing video/computer games is ok in college, but playing them with your friends next to you is much better. One of my funnest experiences last year was playing Super Smash Brothers Melee/Mario Party with 8 people until like 5 in the morning. As long as you don't skip class and refuse to do homework because of them its perfectly fine to play video games for an hour or two a day. Remember to maintain a good social life as well outside the games!

I enjoy video games myself. Here's how I budget my time:

I always go to class. That's a given. I'll usually get my work done in the evenings or if I have free time in the morning since my preferred time for working out is the afternoon (or around 11AM if I need to rearrange the schedule).

At night is when I decide what to do with myself. If I'm going to be with my friends, I usually get back by midnight. I'll play games for a few hours after that. If I've got no activities it's gaming all night (or computer work).

Always put your friends first, or if you insist on gaming, have them over. The guy above me mentioned endless nights of Melee, that's always a good idea. Other good group/party games include Mario Kart (any version), Madden, old-school SMB, etc.

Bolded for QFT.
Thank God I didn't play the expansion. So priest still sucks like before huh, maybe the reason we are tired of playing WOW is because we played priest. Sure it's fun sometimes (while raiding) but other than raiding being a priest sucks. Can't solo, can't pvp w/o a group, can't kill, can't farm well. lol

I had the same problem as Gex, I used to love to raid but being a priest does suck sometimes. Otherwise I used to play WoW with my entire suite so it was always fun banter yelling at each other through the doors and whatnot. The only suggestions I have for you playing wow in college is to never skip class and never turn down a social experience to play wow. Girls tend to not want to talk to you when you blow them off for a video game :/

woah, you guys are all priests? My main is a priest too and I've been healbotting and off-dps'ing. It's pretty wild that I haven't gotten bored :|

When the game first came out my first toon was a hunter but then I realized for every 6 hunters there is 1 priest on my server. So I then rerolled a priest and have been getting invites to groups and raiding guilds like candy. Having to constantly heal everyday because we had a lack of healers caused me to burn out.

As soon as I got to college I quit WoW because I never played it. I couldn't bring myself to go into my room and play a game by myself...way to antisocial for my tastes. I was constantly with friends doing stuff so I just stopped playing. Had a friend flunk our of college this year because he played too much WoW. I say quit now, you know you want to.
